things that took me out of Dune...

(sorry, never read the book, don't know if this was all in the book or not)

Earth like locations: mountains, valleys, greens, fields... i expected to be on another planet, not my back yard
Wax seal
Bagpipes! God golly!! REALLY???/
Pointless close up of a beetle bug crawling
Buffalo head on the wall
The clouds
Palm trees????
Dragonfly crafts
Portable projector from Best Buy
Pet spider (is there a purpose for it in the plot didn't think so)
Chinese umbrella??
The obvious didgeridoo type sounds

lot of Earth based stuff for being on some distant planets in the year 10,000

Let's look at some of your complaints.

Any planet capable of supporting human (or any earth) life is going to have many similarities to earth. Any terrestrial planet has mountains and valleys (Venus and Mars has them. So do a lot of the moons and Pluto). You might argue that there might be other molecules other than chlorophyll for plant (or pseudo-plant) life, but that is the most common one. It is also quite possible that Caladan has had earth life transplanted to it; a common trope for terraforming planets.

Wax seal

They have practical utility and is simple to do.
Bagpipes! God golly!! REALLY???/
Bagpipes might be a good argument. There are lots of ways to produce music.

Pointless close up of a beetle bug crawling
I don't recall this scene, but that sounds like a directorial choice to set a mood.

Buffalo head on the wall
The Atreides have a tradition of bull fighting. A bull or buffalo head seems appropriate.

The clouds
Are you saying they should look different? Clouds, for a human supportable biosphere, are going to be water vapor. There's not a lot you can do to change their appearance other than, maybe, color; depending on the color of your sun. Maybe.

Palm trees????
I suppose they could have designed something more exotic, but their main purpose is symbolic.

Dragonfly crafts
Ornithopters are straight from the books. They look great (though not workable without some kind of anti-gravity generator.) ... To be continued next post.

Portable projector from Best Buy
A projector is a projector. There's not a lot you can do to make them look different assuming an electronic format, as opposed to a reel to reel projector.

Pet spider (is there a purpose for it in the plot didn't think so)
Simply to visually verify that this is another world.

Chinese umbrella??
There are only so many ways to design an umbrella.

The obvious didgeridoo type sounds
What would you like here? That type of sounds if pretty visceral with most audiences to project loneliness and despair.

All of the human population of Dune ultimately came from earth. (by the way, you should not take the year 10,191 as the Julian calendar. There is no indication when the year 1 of the Dune calendar occurs. It could be 10,000 years in the future or 100,000 years, or something else entirely.

Thanks for your reply.

I do get all that, was just hoping for a more "out there" experience.
Not a huge fan, but always thought Dune had decently weird worlds going on. This felt to earth based.

Not sure if it was specified in the book, but that umbrella i was like, "oh come on!" I could have designed a cooler shade device for an outer space epic than something that should be in my fruity cocktail. :)

Sweetie, the franchise takes place in the year 10,191, roughly 8,000 years in the future. Technology has become so advanced that many things in this Dune universe are possible. In fact, this is a society that had to fight a war thousands of years earlier against intelligent machines, and rejected a lot of tech in favor of technology they could control, as well as genetic engineering.

I have a feeling either they found some of these planets in the state they are for human habitation, or terra-forming tech was used some time in the past, allowing the planets to be habitable enough. It wouldn't be unheard of for a terraformed planet to somewhat resemble earth to a degree, don't you think? That would include Caladan.

I actually disliked the palm tree scene, because there was a much better one that was in the book and the miniseries, where Lady Jessica came across an indoor greenhouse that was filled with beautiful, exotic plants, but it was also a gigantic waste of water; yet another example of former Harkonnen decadence. They dumped that in favor of a minor scene with Paul, the gardener, and the damned palm trees, which were later just plain burned in the Harkonnen attack.

Some of the lower-tech stuff goes with traditions that were kept alive. If people care about tradition, they will keep them up no matter how much time has passed. So if you're seeing wax seals, actual bagpipes, and portable projectors, yeah, people might still use them in the far future.

That was a Spanish fighting bull's head. Evidently the Atreides family has both a Greek and Spanish heritage dating back from earth, and bull-fighting was sometimes taken up by the different family members. Evidently Duke Leto's dad was killed doing that, but sometime earlier in his generation, he killed a major bull and had its head mounted on the wall. The bull's head is used as a metaphor for Duke Leto having to meet the "bull" that would kill him like the one that killed his dad, in this case, the Baron Harkonnen.

I thought the Ornithopters were cool, and much better animated than the ones they used in past Dune films. You're right, the spider scene was dumb. In fact, the Reverend Mother wasn't even the one who originally talked with the Baron in that scene. It made no sense, considering their past history (it's complicated).

i do get it, really I do, but it still took me out of it. didnt read books, just knew of them, and remembered the old crappy 1984 version.... where I do feel those sets were far more "out there" than this version. this version - well done as it is - looked low budget too me, with so many vacant shots: a room with walls and no texture or anything, just some fog, so many times the did that... might as well have all been green screened.

i respect that others love it and all, but it is just not for me, I guess
im only at the halfway point, its going to take me forever to finish :D

It was a slog. And I would add to your list the ponderous, solemn, ultra-serious nature of the dialogue and the characters. Cripes, I wonder if these people wonder why they don't get invited to more parties. Every conversation was leaden and somber and grim. I didn't warm up to any of the characters. They didn't seem human, even the human ones. After a while the somberness just stopped being meaningful.

(I'd keep the bagpipes, though. Love a good bagpipe. It's the Scot in me.)

reply

Just to be clear, there aren't any non-human characters in Dune. Navigators, Mentats, Bene Gesserit, are all human.

reply

Noted. Thanks.

It's a hologram projector. I doubt you get something similar at best buy...

reply

i know what it did in the movie, but the prop looked like a modern 2022 portable projector

reply

Form follows function. Why would you change the basic shape and look of a projector?

reply

To make it cool and Sci fi like, perhaps

reply

Which would just be changing something for no good reason. It would not be cool and "sci fi like" is a specious standard. A mark of good fiction is making the world as normal as possible outside the specific changes you are making. A projector projects an image, whether flat or holographic, is going to look like a projector because that is the best form for that object.

reply

A lot of things in this version were cool Sci fi, like the ships etc

reply

I came here to say bagpipes, but I can let everything else go.

reply

I never read the books, and the previous movie sort of seemed like "Not our Humans" but similar humans.... I don't know, I don't think it is supposed to be OUR future, but maybe it is?

reply

Biggest minus is the hero being played by a dainty little Sis.

reply

totally agree

reply

I liked the movie but I seriously could not see a damn thing when it was night time. Not sure if it was the copy I watched or if the movie's lighting is that bad. I don't remember it looking like that dark in the trailers. Anyone else have that problem?
