Why did Michelle choose to go to Texas?

If the radio said that Baton Rouge was safe and to go there, but not to go to Texas unless you have medical experience, why would she choose Texas? She really didn't have any medical experience. Other than that I loved this movie. I don't care if it was a stand alone or part of the Cloverfield anthology. John Goodman was excellent, as usual. Lots of open ended discussion points.

she chose to stand up and fight rather than run away (as she had been established as doing whenever circumstances proved challenging). it demonstrated her growth as a character.

They also asked for people with combat experience. That means that they're looking for people to fight. Although she doesn't doesn't really have any combat experience, she'd rather fight than go hide.

Sequels.

The speed of her transformation from cowed in a corner to alien slaying badass was a touch jarring.

I thought it was just right. She's in a vehicle which has been picked up by alien tentacles. She's less than a minute away from death. After all that's happened and thinking the world has ended, you'd think "Stuff it" and take any action necessary to fight back in any way available as you have nothing to lose.

The radio announces two clear choices: survivors go to Baton Rouge, and those who want to fight, got to Houston.

Medical or COMBAT experience. She already survived her kidnapper and blow off an alien. Also she stitches a wound, hence some medical experience. Also because she decided to help and stand for others.

Yes, she found a way to defeat the alien, and that knowledge would be invaluable to the other survivors. Then of course there is that whole character development about wanting to help the little girl before but ending up doing nothing, and running away from problems. Now she will be taking action.

Another thing that came to my mind when she decided to go to Houston after hearing the announcement looking for people with medical or combat experience was that maybe she actually had some sort of combat training. That people would just not assume she had training, because she was a girl. Unlike when we see a male hero kicking ass we immediately think maybe the guy's a cop or a soldier or a Marine. After all, she was very fit, gutsy, and a quick thinker.

At one moment in the movie she talks about her past and that she has always been unable to help others or herself. Her brother mostly had to stand up for her and take any punishments, because she was unable to do it herself. She also couldn't face her relationship-problems and just fled. Finally Emmett takes the blame and dies, only because she was very afraid of Howard and planning to flee.

Her fear and her tendency to flee from any confrontation is an underlying tone in the movie. So the end shows that she has changed, when she finally decides to fight back and not just flee again.

So that she could leave it open to possibly starring in a third Cloverfield movie?

reply

It's her way of redeeming herself for failing to help the little girl she talked about earlier--a thing she deeply regretted.
