This would have elevated the movie so much. I have no idea why they chose to speak unaccented English, other than that they’re appallingly lazy.

I think they know they're making a Friday night popcorn movie, not some serious shit. For a movie like this, I'm not going to complain. Having to read subtitles through a Predator movie seems shitty and unnecessary anyway.

I get what you’re saying, but all they had to do was have it be a mostly silent film with minimal dialogue (similar to Apocalypto). At the very least, just give them some accents. This just looks like a show for teens on the CW network.

This took me completely out of the movie trailer. At least try to do a fake tribal or Indian accent or anything else than sounding like everyone came from mall shopping.

That’s how I always cope with that type of situation. What will be tougher for me to overlook will be the natives from 300 years ago using iPhones and drinking Starbucks. They’re like 20 years too early. Research, movie makers, research!

I routinely watch international films with subtitles. And I watch english language films with subtitles...

But this thread is wild lol. It's Predator not a historic drama.

k, I just read a thing that said they recorded both a native tongue AND english, so you CAN use the native audio, and add english subtitles. on hulu I guess

that makes it more interesting to me. if not, more immersive

I can't imagine how they did that. Did they shoot every scene twice and teach all the actors the native language? Or did they hire some voice actors after the fact to dub them? Sounds dubious.

I did, still doesn't make too much sense since you continue asking.

They could even use a dub with the original actors speaking a different language (if they know it) without shooting every scene twice. It's called sound mixing.

Since you know the process it's weird for you to say "I can't imagine how they did that.".

In my country we used to have CN in English with subtitles, then they started to dub it in my language (and no, they didn't "reshoot" all scenes, lol) but people complained and they pushed 2 audio channels from wich people with "smart" TVs could choose: original, English language or dubbed, our language.

Even on Netflix there are several languages for most movies that you can choose from. Or bluray disks have the same: several audio channels in different languages.

And you're saying "I can't imagine how they did that.", lol

The keyword there is "or." It presents an alternate scenario. In the alternate scenario the film doesn't have to be shot twice, it's just dubbed.

I suppose the same actors could dub their own dialogue, but if they are not familiar at all with the language it seems they'd bring in some native actors who are.

But in any case, you said, ". . . so you never heard of dubbed movies?" When I had just written, "Or did they hire some voice actors after the fact to dub them?" So that seems to clearly indicate that you in fact did NOT read the whole post OR English is not your native language.

Anyway, dubbing sucks since even in the best of times the lips never really match the dialogue.

Plus, you just written "Or did they hire some voice actors after the fact to dub them?" with a question mark. Like you don't know that such a process could be used. In the context (specially with how you opened and closed the post, it sounded like you are not aware of it although it is always used ;)

And yeah, dubbing sucks, would be nice to have comanche as the original and the movie dubbed in Eng.

Mostly I was making a comment on dubbing. I was essentially saying, "Surely the director did not dub the dialogue," since dubbing is so goofy and, like I said, even the best examples are poor. I am reminded of how Crouching Tiger had an English dub that people said was supposed to be so good, and then I watched it, and it still was very unnatural.

So yes, I know what dubbing it, and how it works, but I find the idea that Dan Trachtenberg would want to use the process to be astonishing.

Sounds like present day.

To make it more authentic, they should speak Comanche and have subtitles…like Mel did with Apocalypto.

The film was shot in English and Comanche. On Hulu, there will be a Comanche dub of the movie, so you can watch the entire movie in Comanche with the original actors returning to perform their roles.
