Love this movie, but it doesn't seem to address the fact that Peter would be a terrible father! Appreciate he is wicked stressed but still the way he has absolutely no patience with anyone slightly different or anyone he judges to be not the same intelligence level. The scene with the kids perfectly demonstrate what an abusive sod he is!

Who can sometimes be a bit annoying ;-) He does not do one cool thing in the movie, there is not one thing to suggest from the evidence in the movie that he would be a cool Dad. I stand to be corrected though. Name me 3 things he does that would make him cool.

shareI agree. Being a parent myself and a former child, I know that kids will test you more in public than anywhere else, thinking that they won't be disciplined in front of strangers. Not only did I learn the lesson that that was NOT true, so did my daughter when I spanked my daughter in Macy's. She learned real quick! She even told me that she does everything in her power not to act up so she won't get embarrassed in public. Your kids will only do as much as you let them get away with. And for the record, time out is BS!

There is some middle ground between being a perfect parent, and a grown man punching a little boy hard in the stomach, because the little boy was being annoying. Robert Downey's character should not be a parent. And he should not have been on his way to attend his wife's childbirth. He should have been on his way to therapy.
He was an annoying little scumbag and he was not his child. He should have cut his damn throat and let him bleed out.

Whoa! Too far, but I get your point. Like most parents, he will learn patience. There are a lot of good parents who didn't exhibit perfect parenting skills that are doing just fine raising there own. I didn't have patience prior to having my child, and I still don't...until it comes to my child, then I have all of the patience in the world.
shareDon't actually have kids.....getting closer to that point though....body clock tick tick ticking, think my main concern when making a decision iro being a parent is whether I would actually be a good parent & would I draw the line at punching one.....I would hope most parents would.
shareIt's simple. Just love them.Learn as you go. My point is,that there is no such thing as a perfect parent, nor can you predict who might be a good or poor one by their pre-parenthood statements. Never did care for other people's kids, myself, but I loved the *beep* out of mine..And, most definitely, do not punch them.
Edit: Now loving the *beep* out of my Grandchildren, it's all a lot more fun from this perspective..and advising my daughter also, not to punch them..no matter how stressed she gets..

I agree with you. He would make an awful father. But the movie doesn't have to address that. There are many parents that are terrible out there. If only "good" parents have children, this world wouldn't need therapists and gun control.

I thought it was obvious. Whole scene from throwing toy to RDJ and him punching the kid and afterward keeping quiet with mother, was all for comedy purpose. It has nothing to do with how good father he can be. That scene was just for comedy and was sure hysterical.
