They keep trying to push Cavill as a big-screen leading man. Honestly, to me he hasn't got it. My prediction is he'll end up leading TV and DtV projects, and 2nd/3rd name for big-screen productions.

Cavill has the acting chops to do it - might even be better than Lambert.

At the same time - another reboot - hollywood is boring the crap out of me.

I'm good with this.

The first movie in '86 was great but every film after that was an embarrassment so it's not exactly like the original franchise is untouchable. The concept and mythos of Highlander is excellent so hopefully they will really take advantage of this opportunity. A lot of the right people are involved to do so.

The first film and the Series were both awesome.

I thought Highlander 3 was ok too but it was just a remake of the 1st one.

Also, the anime feature film from a few years ago, Highlander: The Search for Vengeance (2007) was good too, but it seemed disconnected from the rest of the franchise.

I liked the TV series. In fact, that's really how I first got exposed to Highlander. It wasn't through the movies.

It's a shame that the studio couldn't come up with something good when they had the opportunity to bring Adrian Paul and Chris Lambert together. That really was a wasted opportunity.

I'll have to check out that anime. I can't say I've even heard of it.

I agree. The first film was great, and the series was great (at least seasons 2-5 were -- the first season the show was still finding its feet, and the last season barely had Duncan MacLeod in it; it was thirteen tryout episodes featuring an array of female guest stars, all vying to be the star of the planned spinoff series).

I have no problem with a reboot; enough time has passed since the original was out for it to work. But they should avoid making the same mistakes of the earlier movies. Either make it one-and-done, like the original movie was clearly meant to be, or plan it as a series of films, and have the end part of The Gathering and the final combat that sees MacLeod win The Prize take place at the end of a trilogy or something. The reason Highlander II was so excruciatingly bad was that the first movie had clearly never been planned with a sequel in mind, and to make it possible to have one, they resorted to some truly bad and truly desperate ideas to shoehorn more immortals back into the movie for Connor MacLeod to fight. I remember walking out of the theater in 1991 with my friends -- all of us big fans of the original movie -- and all of us agreeing that the sequel did not happen, and there was this inexplicable two-hour gap in our memories.

I thought Highlander 2 was legit.

The rest of sequels were crap though, including the series - imho.

I think Stahelski can pull this off but I'm keeping my expectations low.

reply

Ya, he's a very good action director. Just give him a good screenwriter.

reply

If this goes through, I hope Cavill plays Kurgan, not McLeod.

reply

Is this going to be rated R like the original or PG13? I'm guessing the latter to appeal to a wider audience. I love the original film; the grittiness of NY and Clancy Brown's evilness were great.

reply

its the John Wick director so most probably R

No point in doing a remake of a beloved classic unless you're gonna really push the envelope and make it as nuts as possible. Push the concepts to their extreme limits and ultimate potential. Normally i'd say they'd never pull that off, especially with the key demographic of a story like this being teenage boys. But they have the exact right director with proven results to make it happen.

It's surprising that Cavill would even be interested in doing another project about a supernatural swordman so soon after quitting 'The Witcher' show.
