Instead of Matthew, the rope should have been tied to the door and Jennifer should have informed the family of his location - they enter the room and that kills him.
It would have been cruel on the family but fitting because he would have died knowing that his family would witness it - a fitting fate for such a family man.
Why subject his seemingly innocent family to that kind of ordeal?

She knows Matthew was retarded - she knew he was forced to have sex with her against her will ...
She should have forgiven this retarded boy and used him to kill everyone in the film and then as a huge twist discover she's pregnant with Matthews baby and the story ending with her in a quandary whether to keep this love child or abort it ---
Who cares about what he felt in this particular scenario? We actually should care about his innocent wife and daughter who'll probably be traumatized if they were the ones to pull the rope. They actually don't deserve the punishment even if it's emotional. You have to really be twisted to want to have that to happen.
