Doesn't really explain Cooper's situation...

Like how his wife Barb didn't put them in the best shelter possible with their kid but left to die on the on surface as it turned into a wasteland, she was a Vault-Tec exec after all.

It also doesn't explain how his index finger didn't start regenerating after it was bit off. He instead had to sow it back on unlike Thaddeus whose toe was hanging by a tendon.

My thought regarding the finger / toe thing is that Thaddeus was a freshly formed ghoul and Cooper was a veteran ghoul. We’ve seen that ghouls in advanced stages tend to be more far gone, more rotten, etc.
So maybe that’s why.

Hmm, plausible. They do age much slower. I guess it's like Wolverine where the healing factor slows down as he got older.

I was listening to Tim Cain (the creator of the original Fallout game). He doesn't think that the company started the war, because otherwise Coop and his kid wouldn't be at that birthday party. Likely they were all surprised that a nuclear war broke out (rejoice, the lore is intact). Coop was disgraced for some unclear reason. So maybe he prevented the plot and lost his wife and his career in the process.

Maybe his wife is in Vault 31?

I can't see any reason why Vault-Tec would really want to get the bombs being dropped? To build the ultimate post apocalyptic society? Why should you screw up the luxurious life for whatever garbage you will have in an apocalypse? Being a warmonger of course makes totally sense, as that let their business float.
It could be of course, that Vault-Tec was totally bankrupt and before they got exposed like Enron, they drop the bombs and rescue themselves. That is the only scenario which would make kind of sense. But I still believe, it was a legit nuclear war, just driven by Vault-Tec, but as an accident.

But Vault-Tec makes in general no sense to me, why was Hank bombing Shady Sands? He could have become the lord of Shady Sands by his control over the cold fusion. Why destroying it and follow Vault-Tec "long time" plan, in which he would be dead? Hank would never be part of the perfect society Vault-Tec in the show was targeting.

reply

That doesn't make to me sense also. It was dumb. They were making huge profits from the conflict. It was a clear leftie insert for me - the rich hates us, blah-blah - and the recent trend of rich people building bomb shelters or something.

Shady Sands bombing was explained in the context of this. They didn't like that civilization survived and bombed it. Still stupid. But Tim Cain says that it is ok for him and doesn't necessary ruin the lore.

Many people don't like it that other people have nice things, this I totally understand. I just don't get Hank's motive, except he is totally indoctrinated by Vault-Tec. He does not get ANYTHING out of it, as he is just the overseer of a damned Vault and as he mentioned at least 20 years away from reclamation day. By the time the high ups of Vault Tec gets unfrozen, he is an elderly.
Meanwhile, he could have gain control/favor of Shady Sands by introducing the cold fusion to them. His wife would for sure forgive him then, as he didn't do anything bad until then, except hiding tech. And this he could have easily explained by keeping it for reclamation day.

So what was his motive? As I understood, he was acting like a spoiled kid. "You took my kid(s), ran away! I will destroy all you own and get away with mine". Dropping a bomb for that is "a bit" drastic.

And then of cause all the Moldaver thing. How she survived, how she gained control in the NCR, how she survived the bomb, why she infiltrated Vault 33 with Raiders and not NCR soldiers...

reply

My understanding is that they were seeing the people of Shady Sands as a sort of barbarians and also not fitting to the plans of Vault-Tec. It is really a half-baked thing put there for political reasons and I prefer to ignore this aspect of the otherwise great show.

reply

Yeah, I will judge by Season 2, they still have a chance to explain many of the plot holes.

Coop broke with his wife and Vault-Tec, this was 100% clear. Why should a veteran, succesful actor needs to humilate himself to be on a birthday party of an ordinary kid? These people were NORMAL people (they had just their own duck and cover shelters!), so there was definitely time passed even when they did a poor job with using the same kid. Most likely in story he had a "fallout" with Barb and was falling in disgrace as commie, Vault-Tec made sure, that he lost all his money. That's why he had to do the shitty job.
What definitely not make sense is that his daughter was with him. There is no reason I can see that Barb is not rescueing her. Of course, it could be that it is several years between Ep 1 past and Ep 3 past and the girl in Ep 1 is actually daughter No 2. This would explain why Coop is still on the search for his family, Barb and Janey. But even if its kid No 2, why would Barb let No 2 be there during the event?

I highly doubt, Barb would leave Vault-Tec for Coop. It would only be explained, if Barb left Vault-Tec and Vault-Tec destroyed both live. But because Barb knew too much, she was kidnapped by Vault-Tec and set in the same cryo prison as Moldaver. This at least would explain, why Moldaver was still around, except she had her personal cryo capsule in her home. Also why he went to Moldaver, as he was hoping to tell where the prison is. But then, whats with Janey? The bombs were already going off by the time of the intro, I have my doubts that he could reach any vault on time to bring her to rescue. Yeah, that whole part has many gaps and still need to be answered in season 2.
