The abandoned car outside the cabin

I've seen references over the years to tweets from ED13 director Fede Alvarez, saying that the car falling apart outside the cabin IS supposed to be Ash's car (with the fact that it's actually a '74 Delta, whereas Ash's was a '73, being down to what was available). I've never seen those tweets (I've never been on Twitter) but it seems to be accepted.

So I guess Alvarez intended ED13 to be a direct sequel to TED, ignoring ED2 and AOD (obviously, if he'd included those films the car couldn't be there). I actually have a vague memory Alvarez may have said something along those lines at some point.

Edit: Okay, I found an article from 2018 that quotes Alvarez's tweet https://movieweb.com/evil-dead-reboot-sequel-debate-answered/

On Twitter, Fede Alvarez was asked by a curious fan if the film is a remake or a sequel, looking to finally end the long-running debate. Straight from the director's mouth, the 2013 film is apparently a sequel to the Bruce Campbell movies. A dead giveaway, as pointed out by Alvarez, is the inclusion of Ash's Oldsmobile, which can be seen in the original films (as well as virtually every other Sam Raimi movie). This was previously thought by some to be a mere Easter egg paying homage to Ash, but Alvarez is clarifying that this is intended to be the very same car. Furthermore, the similarities between the 2013 reboot and the originals were designed that way by fate.

"It continues the first one. The coincidences on events between the first film and mine are not coincidences, but more like dark fate created by the evil book. (Ash car is still there rusting away.)"

I always wondered about whether it should be considered a remake or more of a sequel.

This one being a sequel to the original Evil Dead but not later movies in the series makes a lot of sense. ED 2 actually retcons a lot of things that happened in ED '81, so two different timelines sort of solves some problems there. I do wonder where the Necronomicon in ED '13 came from, though, since it's burned at the end of ED '81.

Yes, the book is a bit of a puzzler.

Evil Dead Rise director Lee Cronin says all five films are one continuity and that there are three Necronomicons; the TED/ED2/AOD book, the ED13 book, and the EDR book (and that those are the three books we see in AOD when Ash has to pick one). That would explain the ED13 book - but it doesn't work in the Alvarez timeline where ED2/AOD never happened.

Edit: Although... I suppose just because Ash's ED2/AOD adventures never happened doesn't mean the three books can't still exist.

2nd edit: If EDR is tagged onto Alvarez's timeline (TED/ED13/EDR), that movie actually does confirm the existence of the three books - so AOD wouldn't be needed, and the location of Ash's derelict car still makes sense.

Also, someone on Reddit posted which ED films (plus the TV show) use which name for the book,

The Evil Dead ~ Naturom Demonto
Evil Dead 2 ~ Necromonicon Ex Mortis
Army of Darkness ~ Necronomicon Ex Mortis
Evil Dead ~ Naturom Demonto
Ash vs Evil Dead ~ Necromonicon Ex Mortis
Evil Dead Rise ~ Naturom Demonto

TED, ED13, and EDR being the only three that use the title Naturom Demonto could be used to back up the idea that those three movies work as one timeline.
