this doesnt surprise me in the least

This was a very ODD viewing experience for me

I'm a Huge Scorsese fan and Had been anticipating The Irishman for over a year, But i must admit, I came into the film with the completely wrong expectations...

I had never read the book the film is based on, I knew next to nothing about Frank in real life, I came into the movie expecting it to be basically a chronicle of Franks hits, I thought it would be more action and Killing than drama, and to be honest, I had no clue it was going to focus and tell the story of Hoffa's Killing, I didnt even know the story that Frank confessed.

so here I am Looking for to The Irishman for all the wrong reasons expecting it to be basically an action movie about brutal Hits...

I start the movie the night it comes, I get about 25 Mins in before I decide to pause it and watch the rest later, at that Point I still didnt realize what the film was, I just figured it was starting off really slow.

over the next 4 days, I struggled to keep watching, I watched maybe 15 minutes at a time....

by then though I realized, I had completely come into the film with the wrong expectations...

On the 5th day, I was around the 1 hour and 20 Mark of the film when i started.

I watched the entire rest of the film without stopping and finished it, I sat there as the film ended in kinda shock.

I almost couldnt believe what I just watched, The Last 2 hours was so Astonishingly Great I was in AWE , I immediately then started thinking about the first 1 and half that I struggled though and realized now that I actually knew what this film was, The first 1 and half was AMAZING too...

Had I understood what this film was going in, I'm sure the first hour and a half wouldnt have been as hard to get through as it was...I still doubt I would have watched the entire film in 1 viewing from start to finish, But I'm positive I wouldnt have struggled through 15 or 20 mins a day waiting for something that was never going to come..

overall though....

I LOVED The Irishman....I rate it 9/10

I thought The De-aging was masterfully done....I thought Pesci was ALL Time Great, I thought the entire 20 to 25 Mins sequence of The Hoffa Killing was probably the best 25 minutes of any film this year, for me that was a Pure Masterclass in film making, The Tension, the Slow build Up, De Niro's Incredible acting of being Heartbroken for having to Kill Hoffa and Pesci's Acting , so few words but made it so clear, Frank had no choice....

The Last 20 mins of the film was Haunting, some the best stuff I've seen put on film that makes you question mortality and Life choices

IMO Its the best movie I've seen this year....

and for me, I would vote for It for Best Picture,Best Director and Best Supporting actor for Pesci

Although I think Brad Pitt was Amazing in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, he would also be deserving for BSA...

I would also vote for Joaquin Phoenix for Best Actor in A Leading Role for Joker

I think I need to rewatch it after your amazing post. Thanks bill.

Nice job Bill. We have a large screen home theatre with immersive surround but we also watch a ton of new releases on the big screen too. We are beginning to avoid new releases from Netflix, Amazon etc at festivals if we are going to be able to screen them later at home. This is the nature of movie watching today; people want choice and flexibility in how they watch, when they watch, stop to catch up on their social media, grab a snack or go for a pee. It's why movie going will become a special event, like going to the opera with the same price tab as attendance dwindles - same as has happened with sports. When we are desperate we'll watch on an Ipad usually while travelling although for the life of me I can't see why you would ever want to screen a movie on a phone. As more of our movies come from these sources be interesting to see whether movie makers take into account viewing on smaller screens and movies get longer as they accommodate home viewing but don't have the content to be a series.

We viewed it all the way thru at home and knew we were watching something special but I couldn't get beyond the younger faces and movement that mimicked old bodies. We then immediately screened Goodfellas and Casino back to back ('cos you can at home :-) and then screened The Irishman again. This time I could get beyond the technology and into the messaging behind the film.

If Scorsese was making this then the actors chose themselves - yes this was the great reunion movie - but I also suspect was essential to the trilogy. I don't know of course that he consciously had that front of mind but there is certainly a way to view these as a collection. I agree that it is about redemption and looking back on a life in the business because that is what it was to these guys - whether it is amped up with the glitzy life of Vegas or ends in remorse as an informer. All detours in the same funnel.

Awe is the right word. It is a masterpiece. Frank was clearly a sociopath, loyal to the bone to his mentors and devoted to the system despite not being a part of it (i.e he was not a made man). The study of how this manifested in everyday life was amazing in its detail. This is what enabled Frank albeit troubled, to take care of Jimmy. This wasn't the glitzy end of the mob, this was the business end. Pesci's charachter refers to the old timers in a mythical sense "taking out a President" and Keitel's "as not giving a shit about Frank". Frank was a working stiff who got to see a better life.

This rekindled in us an interest in the Soprano's who despite Tony's excesses were also troubled schmoes just trying to get by and envious of the super luxurious lives of Wall Street execs and rap stars (Series 1). (BTW the first series is now 20 years old and pre High Def. We screened it on HBO and the props and sound stage shots really don't stand up to 4K screening :-).

We needed a couple screenings Bill but hey we consume movies now in the way that best suits us - we have choices right? Thnx for sharing.

I wonder whether the notion of devotion is something that has driven a number of Scorsese's projects e.g. Silence, Gangs, Bring Out Your Dead, Kundun, The last temptation. Its a theme that gets explored in the Two Popes also excellent.

Brad Pitt was amazing in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood? Really? It was a pretty standard performance, not even remotely deserving of Best Supporting Actor.

^^

you should probably add "IMO" in front of statements like this....

the reason I didnt add "IMO" In front of my statement that I thought Brad Pitt was amazing in OUATIH was because In The particular instance my Opinion fits in with The Consensus....

You on the other have an Opinion thats just not shared by the Majority.

therefor, I think You should probably add "IMO" in front of your statement, so you can let everyone know your not stating your opinion as FACTS....

I know I do that...

for example, I happen to enjoy 4 out of the 5 Transformers films, I do not think they are great movies or anything, I just enjoy them for Their action.

but when I talk about them I always say IMO I enjoy the Transformers films...

I completely recognize I'm in The minority and I'm ok simply liking films that most everyone else doesnt...

another example would be Black Panther....whenever I discuss that movie, I always add "IMO"....Because for me, I just think Its decent to good....

But I recognize, That is not The consensus, based on pretty much any way you can judge a movie, The overwhelming majority views it as Great....So I have no problem simply adding "IMO" to my thoughts on it because I recognize my opinions does not line up with The Majority or consensus...

You seem to be stating as a fact "It was a pretty standard performance, not even remotely deserving of Best Supporting Actor."

and the reality is, Thats just your opinion and an opinion that is not "remotely" shared by the majority...

So, While Theres nothing wrong with you disagreeing with The Consensus(again I l dislike plenty of movies that are considered great), But you change the consensus...

You may feel Pitt's performance isnt Oscar worthy or even very good, But your opinion isnt remotely shared by The Majority.....

so again, You may want to add "IMO" in front of your opinions that go completely against the consensus.....

Or maybe not, maybe your one of those people who would rather desperately claim "nope, I'm right and everyone else is wrong, who cares about the consensus or majority"

Wow looks like I hit a nerve. You done crying and repeating yourself 10 times? Like a goddamn Alzheimer's patient. Look, it doesn't matter how much you want it, he's not going to win BSA. Pesci being fantastic in The Irishman is a consensus and is far more likely to win over Pitt's serviceable performance.

I can relate with the breaks you took. My viewing experience:

5 mins=wow, this feels a lot like a Scorsese movie (a bit of an anti-spoilers person...maybe too much)
10 mins=De Niro and Pesci in same movie? confirmed. A Scorsese movie.
30 mins=I like where the story is going
1hr=looking at my watch
1h30mins=I understand this is a marathon. Imma take a little break
(Intermission)
4 days later=okay let’s finish this bad boy

It was hard to get back to it, needless to say.

Edit: my rating is 7.8/10. I had no problem with the direction. I think it was more a script issue for me. Some scenes dragged and I understand that maybe the intention was to feel like we were there real time with the characters, but the script itself was repetitive in some parts and could have benefitted from maybe 10-15 mins lines cut.

reply

Yeah..I'll admit I started it and paused it about 20 minutes in.
I do plan to go back and finish it but I could plainly see that it's the type of film I definitely need to be in the mood for.... especially given its length.
I'm backlogged on everything media and I have to go for what stirs me as it stirs me .

3.5 hours to spare, in one sitting, on a weekday?

reply

Three sittings for me. Good movie, I think that I gave it a 8/10 on imdb.

reply

Good thing about long movies in TV is that you can watch them in several parts. Have you seen the Lord of the Ring 4 hour long extended versions in one sit?

reply

I think this is a problem with a movie being "made for Netflix."

Its on the TV at home, you can pause it, you can leave, you can watch it over a few days.

You really don't get the "movie experience" of one sitting. Nor do you get the sustained emotion of following these characters at maximum intensity.

I saw "The Irishman" at a theater, on a very big screen, in one sitting. I had no other option than to sit there and take it all in , at once. And I'm glad I did.

It felt like a movie. Not like a TV series.

reply

I watched the entire movie in my home in one sitting on a very big screened tv, popcorn and all. This movie did not need a very big screen to view.
It felt it like a movie. Not like a tv series.

If it's a solid movie people will watch entirely through, if not people will dismiss it. If it's solid no way am I gonna turn away unless I have to.

It ain't Netflix that is the problem, it's the viewers. Ifyou get me. The viewers that can't stand not checking their i-phones every minute.

Good day

You should pause for bathroom breaks. You don't want to get kidney stones.

Dude, iv'e felt those little mothers build up and I bust their ass for trying to build an army against me. Gotta let 'em pass without hurt. Drink lots of water and eat lots of fruit.

Enjoy your day, you'd be surprised at how good fruit and veggie's are for you and cutting back on drinking, actually an excess of drinking. Your liver and Kidney's are a fantastic part of the machine, don't fuck 'em up.

Stop eating McDonald's and all that restaurant shit, it's all added salt, sugar and whatnot to make it taste better than what you can serve yourself.

reply

I actually have a Really inexpensive local theater near me that was showing it and I don't have netflix. so I had no choice but to watch it in one sitting, I bet it was better the way I watched it, but It Dragged and with the option to pause it Iit might have taken me over a week to watch it. It was old slow and tired.

reply

Two sittings for me.
I liked it but it was too bright.
