Ski lift guy to blame

So I noticed the ski lift guy got pissed off when he realized he wasn't getting bribed and possibly sexed by three hot college girls. This is probably when he concocted his plan to give them the one squeaky bad chair on the lift and tell his fillin that there were only 3 and not 6 skiers left. This is also when he went back to his shack he lived in on the side of the mountain and uncaged his feral wolf pride he'd been raising. I dont believe he had a bachelor party to go to either.

reply

You're not honestly suggesting he did that maliciously, are you? When he said there were three people left, he was definitely talking about the three who had just gotten on the lift. Since it's such a long lift, a lot of time had passed since the first set of three had gotten on the lift, and the lift guy wasn't keeping track of exactly how many people had gone up and returned to the bottom. I think he tried to make it clear that another set of three had just gone up, and his replacement just misunderstood.

He was an idiot, and maybe a bit of a jerk, but he definitely didn't leave them up there purposely.

reply

Like THKyle said, he had no intention of leaving them up there. He knew which three he was waiting for, so he could shut it down when they got back.

He didn't say there were two more groups of 3 simply because he forgot about the other trio.

The three skiers who came down before the main characters could've taken a really long time to come down. They might've taken their time just to enjoy it, had gear hassles, stopped to smoke a bowl, taken pictures, whatever.

Point is, he truly believed there were only 3 people left on the mountain. Once that first trio came down, he would've realized he was wrong, but still would've remembered Parker and co. and waited for them. The guy who replaced him had no idea which 3 he was waiting for, so when he saw 3 skiers he assumed that was it.

Is this really how commercial ski resorts keep track of how many people are on the mountain ? By some bonehead minimum-wage counting how many he lets on the lift and then somehow tracking how many people make it back to the bottom of the run ????

I've never been skiiing but I don't think so...

reply

I certainly hope not. I'm sure they have procedures they go through at the end of the day to make sure nobody's left on the slopes, or at the very least, that nobody is left on the lifts.

I was just replying to the original post suggesting that the ski lift guy did it maliciously, which I don't think he did. He was just being irresponsible.

reply

No most certainly not. Checks will always be made to ensure no one is left stranded on a ski lift.

reply

Yeah, I can't believe they wouldn't check before shutting down for a week. Check the lifts, the machinery, the slopes, etc. So many holes in this movie.

reply

If every movie perfectly mimicked reality, we'd have a lot less movies.

Plus, apathy and laziness contribute to many problems that would've otherwise not happened. I got a driver's license once after failing the vision test because the dmv lady was to lazy to refund my money to my card since I'd already paid.

Just because things are supposed to be done a certain way doesn't mean they always are...this movie is about that 1 in a hundred/thousand/million time that procedures aren't followed and unfortunately it had consequences for the main characters. Just because things don't happen doesn't mean they couldn't.

reply

One procedure they DO have: planting a flag on a chair after the last rider has boarded.

Chairlift guy did so, then let the three characters on AFTER he'd sent up the flag.

As far as guy-at-the-top knows, the lift was empty after the flag came up.

As far as replacement-guy-on-the-bottom knows, the flag reached the top, three riders reached the bottom, and he had to pee really badly.

Chairlift guy didn't properly brief his replacement because he was in a rush to keep his bachelor party weekend open.

It all seemed well within the realm of believable incompetence to me.

reply

simplest way of checking that I know of is that the guy working at the upper station of the lift is going down with the lift at the end of the day, so he sees if everything is alright with the lift and if someone is crossing his way taking the lift up...also I was wondering about the lockers they had their stuff in...I mean don´t they check at the end of the weekend if all lockers are empty just for safty reasons?

reply

After the final visitors had entered the lift he put a marker, a flag or sth. like that, on the first empty seat to indicate the guy up on the top station that no more poeple would (be allowed to) enter the lift. Once this seat has passed the upper station, the guy up there can close the lift.

That´s how it usually works (also in the movie!) and it is a very simple, easy and reliable way.

So IF you enter the lift afterwards (and nobody sees you doing that!) you can very well end up on the lift over night, because it being closed once that marker has passed the upper station. (in the movie things develop a bit different, but that´s because of a chain of bad luck for the 3, not malevolence.)

It has happened in the past (rarely, but it did), but usually nobody freezes to death in one night and on the next morning you can move ahead or - more likely - you are being heard by some people leaving the slope late and rescued. That´s why in the script of this frightening movie the resort is closed after Sunday til next Friday, to rob them the possibility of simply waiting overnight ...

The 3 should have simply thrown a ski on the snow groomer, but then the movie would have been over after15 minutes ... (the guy in the groomer would have heard that noise ...).

One of the big plot holes for me is that were are supposed to accept that a ski resort only opens on the weekend.

Ski resorts are big places meant for people to go and stay on holidays, in real life a resort like that would be open 7 days a week.

reply

Yes, I absolutely agree to that!

Such high investments like building all the lifts and slopes call for such a big resort to be open every day in winter. Otherwise they´d never earn their money back and of course there are enough people, who have spare time on week-days, and also go skiing Monday to Friday.

Capital equipment, buildings, all that stuff ... it's there whether the park's open or closed.

To stay open, there have to be enough lift tickets sold to cover the cost of employees on site all day.

If not, they'll lose money every day they're open.

reply

The resorts near LA close during the week and open up on the weekends early and late in the seasons. I think it has to do with the fact that most of the skiers are season pass holders so they do not lose revenue only cut labor and snow making expenses.

reply

No, they check every lift and go up and down the mountain before they shut everything down...it hard to tell how long it will take each individual to go down a slope (like me, it took me an hour to go down the bunny slope). When I go snowboarding there are random patrol people stationed on the slope in case something happens and to herd everyone down in time of closing.

Apparently all of you do not know what SARCASM is. The OP is blatantly dripping with it.

What she ^^^ said!

Um, no. The ski lift guy was honestly distracted by possibly not being able to attend his brother's wedding. He told his co-worker there were three other people. However, since the selfish 'tards never bought an actual ticket, the guy who relieved him (or whoever he was working with) were counting how many people returned according to TICKETS issued. The trio never had a real ticket, so there was no way to know they were still up there.

I blame Joe for wanting to do that last run. Even that worker guy told him a storm was coming, but Joe just *had* to get his last ski run in.. Geez.. he had to wait until they were about to close to do it.. he couldn't have done it earlier ... geez...
