Main character development?

Can someone explain to me in further detail about the character development of Cecil Gaines throughout the film? So basically, the movie starts with a man who thought the only way forward was by keeping invisible and then we see how that changes in him.

Right now, I have:

1. Working in a hotel to the White House. His relationship with his son.
2. His relationship with his son (and his wife too?)

Explain to me more details if you can? Thanks!!

I think the main character development derived from him realizing that black people could make a difference and have a say in their lives. As a child he was helpless. Then JFK made historical legislation because his son's bravery got to him.

He was still fearful and also 'polished' so he had trouble relating to Louis. When his son Charlie died he started to realize that while Louis wasn't always as dignified as he was... He had done amazing things. Realizing his son was a hero gave him the courage to outwardly stand up for the rights of the black house staff and use his position to ensure those rights were respected.
