It's not bad - but no Romancing the Stone

Caught it last night with my daughter... it was fine for exactly what I was expecting. It's a silly comedy adventure where two opposite characters fall in love. Bullock was doing her usual thing, Tatum played his oblivious hunk from a dozen previous movies to perfection, and the supporting cast was solid. There is certainly nothing new here but there were a few laughs and worth a rental for sure.

After it ended I told my kid we need to watch Romancing the Stone, as it's similar but a far better movie. For those of you too young to know the flick it's worth searching for and watching. You won't be disappointed.

It's a lot more of a comedy than an adventure movie, but then again a pure old-school action-adventure movie is hard to come by these days. Though I guess Uncharted is in that vein.

The Lost City came off more like a parody film. Romancing the Stone had a comedic aspect but was more serious and had a tribute to old adventure films about it.

That's what I thought (saw it last night) that it was a parody of every action treasure hunting movie that ever was....so much cliche' crap I was expecting someone to break the fourth wall and look at the audience like "REALLY???".

Breaking the fourth wall would have been amusing. I wanted to like the film but in the end I just didn't feel engaged at all and didn't like the characters.I think I fell asleep during part of it and I don't care about rewatching to see what I missed!

That was my beef. With all new films actually. Nothing is taken seriously. Joke joke joke. The quiet moments where there we see the characters acclimate to their absurd situation is where we, the viewer, fall in love.

I can see how this could have been a really good film. Even with the jokey premise of the male cover model and the older writer. Taking a more serious approach yet still keeping it light hearted would have made it a much better and more entertaining film.
