More so than just a sci-fi or romance, it was...

...an interesting psychological study in human loneliness and the need for interaction. I kept thinking how I'd go crazy alone all those years!

Yeah, I would not have lasted a year by myself like Jim does, probably would have gone 1-2 weeks before I said frack it, looked for the best looking girl pod, popped it open, and hid all traces of evidence that I tampered with the pod. And I wouldn't tell the bartender my plans, either.

One day, perhaps years after our marriage and we have a big family, I would reveal to my wife what I did, and only once I knew the relationship was on solid footing. There is no point in revealing it when no proper roots have been established.

Keep in mind though that the bartender was his only friend for so long. So he'd discussed so much about being lonely and mentioned waking another pod long before he ever considered actually doing it. If you only had him to confide in you'd probably run that by him to at some point, long before you actually thought you'd do it.

But yes, with all that amazing technology and freedom and food and clothes and entertainment and exercise equipment isn't it strange that we couldn't just be happy like that forever? There's something so primal about needing company, even if it is not a sexual companion. I mean, he was thinking about killing himself just because he didn't have it.

Yeah, I agree. They really didn't have it that bad. They could even go outside into the vastness of space if they wanted, and twirl about. There was a movie theatre probably with more movies than any variant of Netflix or Amazon we have today. A gym. A swimming pool with glass viewing area. Multiple restaurants and shops. Plenty of places to explore, jog, read, hold a conversation, etc.

You never have to pay taxes, so that's cool, unless somehow you live to Homestead II and the company makes you pay back everything you used on the ship (yeah right).

They had a near unlimited supply of foodstuffs, we see later in the film that animals are frozen or in cryo, there's plants in storage ready to be used, trees, etc. It looks like Jim and Aurora ended up doing just that, creating their own little farm on the promenade.

I won't lie, I am kinda envious... but at the same time, it could be a very lonely place after a few years, even with a companion.

With such a busy life it sometimes feel like life without other people would be ideal.. and for a little while, it probably would be but sooner or later you're going to need company and the bartender just isn't going to cut it!

I strongly suggest "Moon" if you haven't seen it yet.
