Instead of remaking this for the third (fourth if you count Clueless) time, let's make the first adaptation of a book overdue for the screen, The Blue Castle by L.M. Montgomery.

Written in 1926, it was one of two Montgomery novels intended for an adult readership. I've never read a book more ripe for the screen's picking. It has everything a good story needs, and it's shameful it never has been adapted.

About the over-reliance on remakes in recent years. I don't believe these remakes are about the stories at all. I believe it's more about taking the currently trendy actors and actresses who are creating buzz and plopping them down in an established and comfortable for the viewer role. Anya Taylor-Joy and Johnny Flynn are listed for the newest Emma adaptation. Why not just put them in The Blue Castle?

Actually, let's swap Johnny Flynn with Aidan Turner. He would be the perfect Barney Snaith from The Blue Castle.

MIGHT WANNA KNOW WHAT YOURE TALKING ABOUT BEFORE YOU TALK...REMAKES ARE AS OLD AS ORIGINALS PRACTICALLY...AND JUST AS COMMON IN ANY ERA.

I read this many years back and loved it. It is surprising they hadn't thought of making a movie of it.

It's such a great book, isn't it? I'm glad to come across a fellow Blue Castle reader. A lady where I work is a huge L.M. Montgomery fan, and even she hadn't heard of The Blue Castle until I told her it's a must read.

Now, it's four years after my OP, and it still hasn't been adapted. I believe the book is in the public domain now. I'd be happy with a PBS Masterpiece Theater adaptation. Just something!

Aidan Turner is probably too old now to play Barney, so I need to think about who would be perfect. I still think Anya Taylor-Joy would make a great Valancy.

I have this book in my audio book library that I bought many years ago on sale but never read. I forgot all about it but will make a point of trying it out soon based upon your comments.

I think you have a point about all the adaptions. Especially tried and true authors like Jane Austen with built in audiences.
