It's disturbing, but I think that's what makes it so compelling. Everything we think we know about the world is based only on our own perceptions. The fact that the children's world has been completely fabricated and twisted to control them is itself the most disturbing aspect of the film, the fact that the acts you mentioned are considered normal and justified in the minds of the children is a way of ensuring this demented, twisted version of the human experience hits home.

So there's a point to it.
