A (jet) black comedy? [SPOILERS]

I couldn't help but be reminded of Todd Solondz while watching this. It deals with a serious (and seriously twisted) subject, one that, in reality, corresponds with the horrors perpetrated by, say, a monster like Josef Fritzl -- but the way in which it handles it is, at times, seriously funny. Like absurdist humor. Solondz by way of Bunuel, perhaps. This surprised me considering the reviews I skimmed beforehand on Netflix. "Horrific! Disturbing! Soul destroying!" Yes, yes, yes, all those things, but also "howlingly funny!"

Or maybe I'm just screwed in the head. At any rate, I'd like to see a sequel involving the Eldest wandering around civilization as a kind of Kaspar Hauser figure.

EDIT: I've preemptively added a spoiler tag to the title, as I want to mention the cat scene.

THE CAT SCENE.

There.

I've mentioned it.

No, you're perfectly sane. The people off their rockers are those who can't grasp that life itself is a black comedy.

No, this is not part of my post.

No, you're spot-on. This movie is completely hilarious. Anyone who didn't laugh when the eldest was reenacting Rocky IV has no sense of humor.

i was alternately laughing and feeling really sad for her. a very strange mixture that i think speaks of how powerful the scene was.

Howlingly funny just about nails it.

But that doesn't mean we're not all sick in the head! :P

True. I mean, "the cat is the most dangerous animal there is", "a c-nt is a large lamp", "mom, I found two zombies". Those moments were hilarious. Absurd and twisted in the context of the film, but still funny.
And I don't think we're messed up by laughing, I firmly believe the film is meant to be a black comedy at times.

I'd ask you to play House, but you'd be a weird example for our kids.
