A painting of "Mama?"

The painting little Stan was afraid of looked very similar to the "Mama" character in the movie Mama. Did anyone also see the resemblance as well?

Yes, the resemblance is definitely there. And this is no coincidence as the director of "It" directed and co-wrote "Mama".

The director has said that the painting is based on his own childhood fear of a painting by Amedeo Modigliani that his parents owned ostensibly a print of. Something like this: http://www.ago.net/assets/images/assets/past_exhibitions/2005/modig-blueeyees.jpg

He says something like, "When you're a kid you don't see it as an artist's intent, you see it as a monster."

It seems like this was probably an influence for Mama too!

It's amazing how many old things that were made and intended to be beautiful are frightening to people. Part of it maybe is the painting is actually a distorted image of the person that was painted? In have seen women that kind of remind me slightly of that painting in the movie. There features are not as exaggerated as that but it reminded me of women with certain features. Also sometimes it's just that as a child you feel the picture or painting is off especially if you don't know it's supposed to be old. When I was five my grandma had this picture of a little girl in a night gown praying. I did not know how old it was supposed to be at the time but the girl must have represented someone in the 1920's. Anyway that picture would kind of scare me. I remember sleeping in that room and waking up and looking at that picture. Maybe downright scared is to strong a word let's just say it made me feel weird somehow.

I thought it looked like Jimmy Carr.
