Why the Haters?

Holy crap are there a lot of harsh reviews.

Slant, Seattle Times, Washington Post, A.V. Club all give it a MetaScore under 40 (red - danger!) and The Guardian stiff it with a 20. For a movie with at least two strong performances — including Morgan Freeman’s “best work in years” — what exactly made everyone pile on so?

“Contrived,” “uneven,” “melodramatic,” and “overwrought” seem to be the favorite adjectives used.

Do these folk have something in for director Zac Braff or his writing, or something else? Is someone pissed because it wasn’t Garden State II? Just asking because some of their critiques seem like they might be rightly called overwrought, melodramatic, or at least uneven.

I feel that the reviews of everyday people on this site are more reliable than professional critics. The professional critics seem too agenda driven and they spend more time judging the movie against their own “virtuous” bonafides than telling readers if it’s entertaining and worthwhile for investing a couple hours.
