It seems Indy has gone more Skywalker and less Maverick

A shame.

They basically ruined Luke in the new trilogy, did they do the same to Indy?

That's what I've been reading here and other places. Much like Luke, he's now a useless old man who needs to be pushed aside by a young and more capable lead.

It's not so much a passing of the torch, but a knocking down of the torch bearer for the sake of elevating the next.

Maverick did it right. He flew off into the sunset still a hero, but knowing it was his time to step aside and let it go.

* Full disclosure: as of the time of this post, I have not watched Dial of Destiny. This is based on what I've read from others.

They have plans to build a new franchise around Helena, so the easiest way is to use Indy to elevate her. I just hope they did not ruin Indy for that purpose since I am still planning to watch it once streaming started.

I'm fine with that, just like if Top Gun wanted to build the franchise around Phoenix, they could move that way. Top Gun didn't need to destroy the legacy of the former to do it the way they did Luke.

I'm hoping Indy isn't quite as extreme, though I wish it didn't have to be that way at all.

That's what I noticed when watching, Maverick was still a larger than life hero, Indy was depressed and a loser.
