How did the people of Atlantis go from disaster above water to thriving underwater?

So I've never read any Aquaman comics and I feel it wasn't properly explained in the film.

The Atlantians are this super advanced Human race with cool tech that eventually leads to their downfall and Atlantis is swallowed by the sea. The film stated they evolved to live under water. What? In the 15 seconds it takes to otherwise drown? That would take millions of years.

They were so superior that they were able to evolve in 15 seconds being underwater

They probably had years of practice, driving hybrids prior.

Didn't the movie say Atlan used the power of his trident to change the Atlanteans so they could survive.
