"The Holdovers" Demonstrates "Alexander Payne's Personal Stylistic Touch."
Alexander Payne has a "stylistic touch" I love: sudden deadpan cutaways to a photograph or painting that rather "raise an eyebrow" of condescension. In About Schmidt, it was a cut to a photo of a man with a prize winning cow on a leash. In The Holdovers, there are SEVERAL such cuts to paintings of the "grand old men" who founded the college.
