Already campaigining for Best Original Screenplay!

Because the Barbie team know damn well there isn't a hope in hell for Best Picture.

Because the Best Picture honor is reserved for the sort of serious drama I've lost interest in, so the Best Original Screenplay Oscar has become a sort of default Best Other Movie award. It goes to indies or comedies or offbeat films, so maybe "Barbie" has a shot.

reply

Hope it wins some awards. Fun movie.

reply

I thought the screenplay was terrible, but it will likely get nominated and could win for original screenplay.

reply

I couldn't believe the hype. Terrible movie with no rewatch value.

reply

It definitely has a shot, there is hardly any movie recently, or at least this year, could be called original.

reply

Of course it's not clear that this can be called "original", because they've already made a shit-ton of animated Barbie movies!

Which I know because I spent years working nights and spending my nights off surfing late-night basic cable for anything but infomercials, not because I have any interest in Barbie stuff.

reply

It is not based on a book or video game or a true story, not a sequel of any current franchise, it is definitely not a spin off of any exist barbie cartoons. I haven't watched any of barbie cartoons but I think they are likely very much child stuff targeting children under 10.

All the ideas are mostly original. There are various "culture references", which copied off some classic movies, but they are more of inspired by than outright copies of concepts.

So I think it qualifies as original.

reply

If Barbie is the best original screenplay, I don't want to watch the other movies this year.

reply

No, no, no, in the age of big franchise IPs and bringing books and video games to big screen, it could be the only notable original screenplay.

So it stands out because there is really no competition, at least I am not aware of any.

reply

The Academy Awards haven't been relevant to representing the quality of a movie in a decade at least. It's a self indulgent circle jerk amongst the industry, nothing more. Hell, it's well known that many of the voters don't even watch all of the movies. These awards are essentially meaningless.

reply

I've pretty much lost all interest in the Oscars now.

reply

ratings show that most people have.

reply

This will definetly get a best picture nomination. It's the highest grossing film of the year and professional critics loved it. It was only unpopular with the far right.
