Jackson could have quit

It is tragic that Jackson did not think that retiring was an option. His friend Noodles showed him that this was a possibility. He could see how happy he was with his family. Ally's career would have continued, and he would have taken a back seat and continued to stay sober. He could have carved out a new career as a song writer rather a performer.

I think he felt like he was holding her back and at the same time he couldn't live without her. Plus he probably didn't think he could stay sober and would just end up embarrassing her again.

Yes. In the 76 version I recall he had gone through rehab and seemed content w just being sober supporting the Ally character's career and and having his life in order.

His death then was really portrayed as ironic. He went out on a sunny day and was just driving his car recklessly. Maybe symbolic of the tragedies that are typical in the the rock world.

Here he was suicidal. The meeting w Allys' agent and knowing he wouldn't' be able to tour w her must have really affected him.

Responding to your replies, he had tried to kill himself before. Maybe he was so emotionally damaged that retirement was not viable.
