The finale was just a set up for countless more spinoffs

The episode was actually fairly decent, but the whole idea was just to set up Darryl's show, Rick and Michonne's show, and Negan and Maggie's show. I don't think this is going to pan out quite the way the creators want it to because people were really getting tired of this show. They certainly aren't going to watch three more shows now when most were ready for this show to end. I wouldn't be surprised if Rick and Michonne's only lasts a season or two, and then one or both of the other shows get cancelled based on Rick and Michonne's ratings not being anywhere near what they should be.

Franchise fatigue already kicked in.

Not only that, but also Zombie Apocalypse-genre fatigue in general. There's really not much more you can do in the genre that hasn't been done a million times before by now.

They also have "Fear the Walking Dead" still going. It sounds like they may have 13 to 15 weekly episodes for each, so they will have one show on the air all year long. Remember, they were supposed to release a theatrical film starring Rick and the whole cast. That got scrapped, probably so that they can put more on TV.

I imagine they did not want to keep paying for a large cast, with people who want more money each season. In the last season, a lot of cast members did not appear at all in some episodes. So they will probably have a lot of new, cheaper actors. If the ratings stink, maybe some guest appearances from old cast members.

I don't know why they decided to put Darryl in France for his new show. "Carol" opted out of moving there.

The only point of any serialized series is to make it go on and on forever. Remember, keeping a series going means keeping the paychecks going for the cast and crew. Would you purposely do anything to end your job and your pay? No. So, you just keep doing everything you can to somehow keep the series going. And, if the series ends, you start the spin offs and keep them going.

You can tell who the five idiot actors are that wanted this show to continue when everybody else was ready to move on.

To say that I was disappointed is an understatement. It was rushed and badly written, disrespectful to all fans who have followed the series for 12 years. It was essentially a plug for several spinoffs, which I doubt will be successful. Not even FTWD is doing great, specially since last season was garbage and Alycia left, and don't think will take long for the spinoffs to get cancelled. It will feel very anticlimatic when that happens, and I wlll blame producers of robbing the series a proper payoff.

Like you said, audience is just tired of TWD Universe. AMC should put a knife to its head, because TWDU has become what it depicts, but they won't as they don't have another cash cows, specially since Better Call Saul ended.
