If you stop paying attention to the gigantic spacecraft in both movies...

...they don't have much to offer otherwise. It seems Villeneuve cared more about making his giant vehicles and ground battles look good, because these two films were severely lacking everywhere else.

I was stunned by the ornathopter's boring design. I thought in 2024 sci fi would be past modeling vehicles after ordinary insects from earth. That's like Jules Vern era stuff.

Since that is precisely what ornithopters are supposed to look like, changing them would be egregious. These were some of the best ornithopter designs I've ever seen.

I liked the ornithopter's design, but the trouble is, they don't seem to do very well in the Arakkis's brutal climate, particularly with all that sand in the air. It would have made more sense to have a vehicle with a smooth, aerodynamic shell on the outside and most of the moving machinery shielded from the aerial sand outside.

I was extremely underwhelmed by the very plain, boring costumes, the very plain architecture of the building interiors (you'd think they would make the palaces prettier inside), and lack of chemistry between the characters. They all just barely showed any emotions beyond being intense, angry, or worried. One part that particularly annoyed me was, they never show any scenes with Lady Jessica and Duke Leto together (other than being torn out of bed during the Harkonnen attack), showing any affection or being romantic towards each other, showing exactly why she chose to disobey the Bene Gesserits and make him happy instead. They also completely missed an opportunity to show the Weirding Way when Lady Jessica suddenly has Stilgar by the throat out of nowhere.

Totally robbing us of seeing the Guild Navigators was a bad move, because now, unless people watch the older movies, they have absolutely no idea how people were able to fly their ships across vast distances in a few minutes using no advanced computers. Plus, I would have loved to see Villeneuve's take on what they Navigators looked like. Everyone has their own interpretation on how these humans were mutated by Spice Gas, and no two artists' depictions are exactly alike on the matter.

AGREED!

I'm not even going to watch the 2nd part, ever. 1st part was a drudge to me. I didn't much like the 1984 version, but now I will rewatch that for this story than this, what is it now, 5 hour slog?

I don't remember. But I would recommend watching the miniseries from 2000, though it'll take you a day or two to get through it, seeing as it's at least 2 or 3 episodes. Get ready for some funky, Star Wars-level fashion ;)

reply

I disagree with that. I thought the movie was excellent
