So uhhh about the ending of this film...

It's pretty apparent that Lisabeth fell in love with Mikael but at the end of the film it makes it obvious that Mikael was only.... using her and still loves Erika? Idk I'm pretty fckin' confused so if anyone who read the books wants to let me know if that's the case that would be great.

His initial reaction was that it was a bad idea, with the age difference and all. I think he figured it was casual as she was pretty distant and unreadable.
As for why he'd stay in a relationship with a married woman, I have no damn clue. I really felt for Lisbeth though.

He isn't in a relationship with a married woman as far as i remember it was just a casual arrangement they loved each other and that was that. Same with lizbeth he was extremely fond of her by the end of the first book and didn't use her in the slightest it was all her idea, they spent months in his log cabin just the 2 of them while he wrote his piece on vennestrom (can't be bothered checking if i spelled it right). He simply was just spending Christmas with that woman and when lizbeth saw it it sort of just logically clicked in her head that she had very much fallen in love with him and so she just cut it off without any contact with him.

Haven't read the books though. Just my thoughts from viewing the film.

Well in the book Lisbeth is not falling in love with Mikael (as far as i can remember, long time ago i read the book), so the story in the movie is different then the book. It seems like they have tried to make an better ending for a movie.

Of course she fell in love with Mikael. SHe bought him an tin-plate sign of Elvis. She's on her way to his flat when she sees him and Erica leaving the coffee bar and she's mad with jealosy. For a short second she even considered to smash Erica's head with the sign. She threw it into the garbage, though. LOL

I've read all three books. She was most definitely falling in love with Mikael, which was a first for her.

She is mopey and pissy in the whole second book because he is not into her in the same way.

reply

She did fall in love with Mikael, but saying Mikael used her is rather unfair. She was the one who jumped on him, and he didn't say no. He never gave her any hope, neither were they a standard couple, with promises and *beep* at any point in the book or the movie. Mikael is simply not attached to any woman in particular, his relationship with Erika has some regularity, but that's it, they're not a couple. Lisbeth simply raised her expectations on her own, and was dead upset about doing it for the first time in her life only to be disappointed later on.

Erica I thought was married and I got the feeling by her age and wisdom was not looking for anything more than outside of the marriage sex. It seemed to anyone watching this film 5hats all there was to them. So she did have a chance with him.

reply

Mikael isn't using her. He was reluctant to become involved with her because of their age difference. Once the case was solved and he was back home with Erika, his relationship with Lisbeth was over. He assumed she would realize that.

reply

Nah sorry but that's completely not true. He spent months alone with Lizbeth in his log cabin while he wrote his book and magazine and they where very close. For him he developed a deep connection to Lizbeth and she cut things off with him without even telling him all because she was jealous, upset and confused about her own feelings. She was starting to change and already had taken out a few piercings to become more normal for him. By the end of the third book her hair is normal, i think she only has 1 or 2 piercings and she has a boob job.

Keep in mind Lisbeth researched Blomqvist and knew about his personal life and romantic history. She also knew his relationship with Erika was longstanding and led to his marriage dissolving. So at the end deep down she knew his relationship with Erika could not be expected to end, and wasn't prepared for this reality when she saw them together. Blomqvist wasn't using Lisbeth; while he wasn't in love with her, he had developed strong feelings for her. He respected her, didn't judge her and was fiercely loyal. This played out more in the details of the books, and really drove Lisbeth's feelings for him.

I liked the ending of the American movie - Lisbeth driving away without saying a word because of, what could very well turn out to be, a misunderstanding. It's quite possible that Mikael was not continuing his affair with Erika, they were perhaps just going somewhere as friends or colleagues. But Lisbeth, being a person who has been hurt before, assumed its time for her to leave.

reply

Yah, I felt bad how it ended between those two. I'd rather be with Lisbeth than some married chick. Jeez.
