Nope, it really is not a big deal. Here is some info on Texas, for a DUI blood alcohol level is minimum 0.08%. A first time conviction results in jail time of 3 to 180 days, fines up to $2,000, suspended license for 90 to 365 days. 2nd time 30 to 365 days jail,$4000 max fine, 180 days to 1 year suspension. 3rd time 2 years jail,up to $10,000,
80 days to 1 year.

Jail time is often probated by giving a sentence of 90 days probated to 12 months. Short jail terms of 10-20 days can be served on weekends, with time reduced for good behavior and community service. Fines can be reduced to minimums, sometimes below by serving jail time. License suspension can be avoided by claiming a compelling need for transportation, job, health, and other reasons. There is a lot of good ol boys network, who knows who, politics and boys will be boys attitude involved. Even if everyone concerned is female.

If license is not suspended or when reinstated a $2,000 a year surcharge is required for 3 years, the penalty for not paying is suspension of license. . The main effect of the surcharge seems to be people driving with invalid or suspended license. There is also a mandatory requirement to carry an SR-22 high risk insurance policy for 2 years. This results in people driving without insurance.

There is not a lot of public shame associated with a DUI. A celebrity or politician may have a brief flash of publicity but it soon dies down, if a low profile is kept. It is not rare and folks are not surprised to read of 5, 6, 7th charges or even convictions of DUI, driving with no license or insurance. There are also places where local cops or deputies will give a good friend a ride home to sleep it off after pulling him over. Off duty cops get DUI's. And just recently a local cop got an on duty DUI.
