The premise

Even if a company had a policy where promotion was impossible without education, and any employee after a set time who didn't get promoted was summarily fired, this would still never happen.

He's clearly a good employee. They would have made him aware of the policy long before this (like when he was last up for promotion and lost it to the bozo), and given him the opportunity to upgrade his education in his spare time.

You don't just throw away your 8-time Employee of the Month due to a policy loophole, especially in a business where employee turnover is a problem and most employees hate their job, performing with minimal effort.

Plus I am not sure they really liked Larry that much to begin with, yes he was a good worker but he was TOO GOOD of a worker.. whenever you are outshining the upper management with lower qualifications as in education even though its great for Larry its really bad for everyone else..

reply

larry made people jealous. yep, sad, but true.

Don't forget that the guy WITH the degree was let go as well. Most likely they were cutting back across the board, and started with the people with no degrees.

If they weren't cutting back, then I agree that they were foolish for letting a guy like Larry go. They would have been much better getting him in to some kind of management training program and/or paying for him to get some kind of degree. I can't see where he would have balked at the idea of taking a few classes at night if it meant moving up the ladder.

reply

the guy with the " degree" was let go because it was worthless piece of paper for jock with a full ride...
When Larry is getting fired for not going to college Jack Strang (Rob Riggle) holds up his class ring and says "SMU Class of 1986. Solid gold. They weren't giving these things away."
In 1986 SMU was given "The Death Penalty" by the NCAA for major infractions, including graduating students who had not earned an academic degree.
now the thing is.. this movie was basted on tom hanks pals life.. so i am guessing quite a bit of this movie really happened. but in a less funny way :P

reply

I'm familiar with all of that. My only point was that Larry was let go first under the guise of him not having a degree. 😃

totally suspicious.

I totally agree !!
it's like they said one day
"oh here's somebody we can fire. no degree."
it's a shame that companies don't appreciate good loyal employees.

Every Day Above Ground is a Great Day !!

Or, at the very least, put in charge of U-Mart's Icee machine!

"She filled the blank with a tube of denture cream and a false sense of superiority."
