If this movie didn't scare you...

Please name a few that did! This is not so I can rag on you for your choices, it's so I can go rent them and then regret it when I go to bed.

Insidious scared me, so did the conjuring. James Wan is a master at horror!

I recommend Halloween (either the re-make or the original). Both genuinely scared me and were made extremely well. Another classic is Wolf Creek. I am yet to see it, but all my friends (who have good taste in horror) highly recommend it and reviewed it as being excellent.

Best of luck

reply

@kristead yea wolf creek is best australian horror... one of my best horror flicks

reply

Not a horror film, just a slasher film.
there is no scary parts, just cool and disgusting parts in the film.

it's very good, but it's no where near a horror film

reply

Yeah Wolf Creek scared the pants off me when I saw it in 2005. And 2 years earlier I saw The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake. After seeing both movies I wasn't the same for days. Although I was quite young back then when I saw them. I'm now 26 and I must admit, Insidious actually scared me. And for once it wasn't from jump scares. The truly scary parts played out slowly, and just totally creeped me out. The next scariest supernatural movie I've seen would probably have to be The Exorcism of Emily Rose. Mostly thanks to the natural terrifyingly looking lead actress.

Also, check out Spoorloos (The Vanishing). More disturbing than scary though.

Insidious had a good premise, but I thought a lot of the execution was just clumsy (the red demon and his lair, a bit silly if you ask me) and relied way too much on music-induced jumps to scar you. That bit (SPOILERS BEGIN) in the 1st house early in with the baby-phone was really effective, as was the whole main door part (SPOILERS END) but once the films started showing us things rather than just alluding to them, it lost a lot of effect.

Films that are scary...

I'd definitely nominate "The Exorcist" because of its uncompromising cruelty, and the more you see, the worse it gets. It's annoying that it's been parodied so much but if you let yourself get into the mood it's a really unnerving experience. Same goes for the original "Alien". More recently, "Martyrs" is a really mean piece of work. These are all films that take time to set up their premise, and create a horrible mood of doom before actually going into the frightening/violent bits.

And of course, David Cronenberg's "The Fly".

I didn't think Insidious was very scary either. It was pretty lame, actually. Rose Byrne is not a very good actress and I could not understand how she wasn't freaking out more than she was based on the events that were happening. Especially the part with the bloody sheets and the hand print. I would have immediately grabbed my family and driven very far away.

Ah, The Vanishing. I think Kubrick said he saw it three times and told the director it was the scariest thing he'd ever seen. Always manages to give me chills.

I thought it was overatted. It didn't scare me. I like more psychologically disturbing movies. I did like sinister, though. Rosemarys baby, session 9, the thing (1982 version), audtition. These are a few very creepy movies.

reply

I am going to watch Session 9 soon. Very excited.

reply

Session 9 is very subtle and the end is horrific in a special way

reply

I like Dead Silence, the most of al horrors.
I dont get why it is rated so low.

reply

Thanks all!

Watch Korean horror A tale of two sisters, audition and shutter.. and watch Sinister it is very creepy,
And yes Insidious scared hell out of me
The conjuring is good creepy as well as scary but not more than sinister and insidious.. :)

reply

Yes tale of two sisters, gave me the hibbiejibbies several times.
For me a good scary movie is where you have no clue whats going on and where you dont see whats causing all the troubles.
Movies like texas chain saw, zombie movies, dont scare me at all, its just fake blood splattering allover the place, meh. Prefer the atmosphere playing on my imagination rather then watch a bunch of morons chop each other in half.

I watched it until a certain scene, and turned it off. I wasn't scared, but something in the back of my mind knew that the director was just going to try and use the most shocking imagery he could think of.

Spoiler for a scene in Antichrist.
It was the scene where the girl hits the guy with a rock or something heavy, and then "man handles" him to completion and blood spurts out.

I am pretty desensitized and will watch most things, but something told me that anything after that scene that nothing good could come out of watching the film.

reply

mrmad2001, I think Insidious is the most perfect horror I have seen and i also think its damn disrespectful to just watch it till a certain scene. And then come here and say I knew what the director was going to do.

I just wanted to point it out.

I've seen Antichrist, it is a bit damning I'll give you that but is it scary just because it doesn't explain or is it scary because there are just man and wife or is it scary because it has the most damning first one scene ever?

Either way, Insidious had not one flaw.

For a member that has been registered since 2005, you either don't know how to use the message boards or don't read for content. My post was a direct reply to Antichrist, and mentioned nothing about Insidious. Antichrist is the film that I turned off, and my reason is pretty clearly stated complete with spoiler text.

I watched Insidious to complete fruition, and can say it was one of the least threatening "horror" films I have seen. I do not agree with your "not one flaw" comment. The main villain was comically designed, and the film relied on a soundtrack to try and scare you. I personally wouldn't recommend this film to anyone.

reply

In that case, one wonders what you deem as a good horror experience

"To understand all is to forgive all."

The Exorcist, The Shining, Psycho, Halloween(original), The Texas Chainsaw Massacre(original), Night of the Living Dead, Jaws, Alien, The Descent, The Thing, Frankenstein, Let The Right One In(both of them), Rosemary's Baby, The Evil Dead, Audition, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Suspiria, The Fly, Re-Animator, Carrie(original), The Wickerman(original), Misery, 28 Days Later, and so on...

Even The Conjuring was a masterpiece in comparison to this film.

reply

Love most of the films you mentioned there, and like the rest, except for Let Me In and The Descent. I can't see why people like those movies, but you and I have almost the same taste in horror movies.

reply

Obviously that was just a quick list off the top of my head and not definitvie, but I can completely see why many wouldn't include Let Me In or the Descent.

For me, Let the Right One In is obviously a far superior film, but the remake is pretty decent. If I were ever to have to choose between the two, I would always pick the original.

The Descent borderlines being a good horror experience, and a schlocky one. I really think the first half of the film is good horror, with a very claustrophobic vibe, but it gets really silly towards the end. I could easily take this film off of the list, and put it on my guilty pleasure Horror list, which includes the likes of the Feast series, Tremor series, Hatchet Series, Slither, Jeepers Creepers series, etc.

reply

Even your guilty pleasures get along with my taste. I've seen the first Feast and thought it had a lot of fun ideas and I really want to see the sequels (I own them on DVD but haven't seen them yet). Tremors, well, I just LOVE the first one. I saw the sequels when I was a kid and I don't remember them that well, but the first one is one of my favorite B-movies. I've seen Jeepers Creepers 1 and 2, enjoyed both. Slither was awesome. Haven't seen Hatchet yet. Man, I reaaaaaaally need you to make me a recommendation list, because your taste = awesome. I'm sure if I wrote some of my other favorite horror movies you'd find a lot that you hate (I love a lot of unpopular movies), but it seems that I like the ones you like.

reply

Just to name a few... The Descent, Rec 1 and 2, Funny Games and Paranormal Activity 1.
