You don't need electricity if you have wood

and live animals. They keep fresh till you kill them, then you eat them. You can make candles with their fat. If there's no internet or tv you go to sleep.

I believe Ann wanted electricity to power refrigeration for long term food storage.

Rest in peace, Roger Ebert. You were the best.

I know she wanted it. But it's a modern idea to store meat that way, without modern means. There are many better ways, like live on the fish, fish as you need it. Boil in jars (canned), or make jerky.

You missed the whole part of the movie where she said she nearly died from starvation over the last winter. I don't see a jar store near by and she couldn't exactly follow the migrating animals around (she was trapped).

Yah this was a major flaw. Man, imagine what would've happened to our species if we didn't have electricity thousands of years ago! We'd be dead for sure!

reply

The lakes froze. She couldn't hunt or fish. And obviously there would be a crop problem.

She needed the refrigeration to store the food for the winter.

Obligatory condescending remark: Next time pay attention.

reply

If the lakes froze, she could keep the food cold outside. She wouldn't need a refridgerator.

reply

Yes, lakes freeze over, but you can't store the meat products underneath the ice, can you? The meat rots during the day when temperatures rise above freezing point on land.

Just a guess, but I suspect your attention dwindled a little during the part where she explained to John how nearly she starved to death during the previous winter. Should the coming winter be harsher, the outcome may well be death.

For the "but our ancestors lived without electricity" argument elsewhere, yes, that's true. But our ancestors could move from place and place, and the vast majority of them lived in climes where winters were more manageable.

Ann obviously didn't have that option - she was trapped in that valley.

Why do they need to store meat in the winter, when it is freezing outside, or you can dry meat, or smoke it or salt it?

reply

Just for the record, the initial impetus for getting the electricity going in the movie was their desire to consume pond fish throughout the year. This prompted the idea of refrigeration being used as a method of storage and stocking-up fish after capture.

Before electricity and before proper refrigeration food poisoning was pretty high, so it stands to reason to get the power going again.

Really? And how am I supposed to dry my hair? Hit myself over the head with a stick?
