The Quiet Earth is a great film but Z for Zachariah is a 1974 novel which was originally made into a BBC drama in 1984 so it pre-dates The Quite Earth which was based on a 1985 novel.

Quiet Earth the movie (1985) was loosely based on Quiet Earth the Book (1981)
It has more in common with the 1959 film The World, the Flesh and the Devil, of which it has been called an unofficial remake
I think both Z for Zachariah and Quiet Earth are both pulling from similar source material and neither is intentionally copying the other.
It's a pretty common recurring theme in sci fi.
Writing anything completely original now must be very difficult - however both are enjoyable stories..
Try Inverted World by Christopher Priest if you're looking for something interesting but be careful of spoilers in any review you may look at. Avoid the review by Martin Amis.
