I agree. One of Close's least charming characters.

Wrong. It was one of her best performances . She played the smae role on Broadway some 30 yrs ago.

The performance was fine; the face was but a mask almost in rigor. Yer also wrong about it being Broadway -- she won an Obie for it which is awarded for off Broadway productions. We have no idea what the makeup looked like then.

Fine... in a minimalist sense... I love Close, and I agree the overall performance was stunning, but I fear it is within any actor's grasp to stand deathly still and have no facial expression for an entire film. She has had much better performances.

Yes that's right, she looks like a lot of people and things in this, all at once and once in a while.

She does indeed look like a ventroliquists's doll but I think the excess makeup is the major problem, if only they had just let Glenn dress and have a mannish haircut alone ala Janet as Hubert. However her performance is outstanding and I easily overlook it.
