The doctor (SPOILERS)

He seemed a decent man in many respects (though obviously not all). I really thought he would keep Albert's secret. Was anyone else, even if not shocked, disappointed by his revelations?

reply

I don;t know about shocked and disappointed. Perhaps he was afraid that if he didn't reveal what he knew, someone else would tell all? Do we even know that it was the doctor who blabbed? Doctors don't usually prepare bodies for burial. Maybe whoever did that told? At any rate, the doctor's promise to live "honestly" seems to provide a sort of justification if he did tell Albert's secret.

reply

The death would have to be reported and certified. As the examining doctor, he would have been obliged to.

And Albert died as a result of a violent blow. Every murder was a huge deal. There's no way that he could have covered it up.

You did just fine, Clarence. Now go git yo'self some hot cornbread!

reply

I got the uncomfortable sense the Dr. was disgusted by Albert's secret, when he frowned and said "what miserable lives people lead" (or whatever)

I don't think this was the actor's or the filmmaker's intent....but it's actually how practically any ordinary person in the Victorian Era would react to a crossdresser. And that reaction would be considered MILD.

i took that reaction as him thinking that it's miserable for people to have to hide who they are their entire lives and never be allowed to be free. it wasn't disgust at all but sorrow.

reply

I agree; I don't think he was disgusted, but rather saddened by the revelation.

reply

Agreed that the Dr. was saddened. Also, agreed that the death would have to be reported, thus; Albert's sexuality going public.
