Brenda Fricker - is she really in the movie?

Not a single review has mentioned her name. Is she really in the movie? And if so what role does she play?
Thanks!

She was in the credits, but I cannot for the life of me remember what role she played...

reply

She played the role of Polly, a woman who I believe worked at the previous hotel that the Irish lad had worked at before he got fired.

She's in the entire duration of the film, pottering around. I don't know if she was the cook, but she was always in the kitchen preparing teas and the lunches. She also ate breakfast with the group every morning. I barely recognised her until she had that close up scene with Nobbs late in the film, she is heavier and greyer than from the last time I have seen her, but she still has that warm and maternal face and voice.

She was the one who told Albert about Helen being in the family way. She was near unrecognizable, but that voice is unmistakable.

"By God, man, I like the cut of your oatmeal and the cut of your jib."

reply

I thought that was who she was, the woman who looked like she was kind of running the kitchen.

reply

Indeed - I was shocked when I finally realized that the plump woman in the kitchen was the legendary Brenda Fricker. If I hadn't noticed her name in the opening credits I wouldn't have known that it was her.

She's nearly unrecognizable: http://press.ifta.ie/photo-archive/detail/22/750.html
