Irish friends: The movie takes place in Dublin, but there is also a scene on a beach. Is Dublin really close enough to the sea for people in a horse-and-buggy age to get there in one day?

Dublin is on the coast, and you can get to the beach in 20 mins on a commuter train. So yes.
