The locks look to be, at this point:

Glenn Close - Albert Nobbs
Viola Davis - the Help
Meryl Streep - Iron Lady
Michelle Williams - MWWM

Davis' name just keeps showing up on every list, so I'm thinking she's in.

For the fifth slot, Jodie Foster is getting great buzz for Carnage, Charlize Theron plays a real jerk in Young Adult, which should help her by playing against type, plus she's a previous winner, so you can't count her out.

I like Tilda Swinton for We Need to Talk About Kevin, but she's a darkhorse for that movie, which is very challenging and dark.

And there's also Elizabeth Olson for Martha Marcy May Marlene.

________

I saw Nobbs here in Toronto, and since she hasn't won yet and her performances is excellent, I think Close has the edge.

Iron Lady will be Meryl's 17th nomination. The last time she won was nearly 30 years ago now. If the movie is acclaimed as well as her performance, maybe it's hers. Her body language in the trailer is an uncannily good rendition of Thatcher.

As much as I liked Viola in the help I think it's going to come down to a neck and neck between Meryl and Glenn. My guess is they will finally award it to Glenn.

I think it's Glenn's turn. This is HER film-she's nurtured this piece from its inception and she's doing something very, very difficult-she's playing a man. It sounds easier than it is-she's receiving critical praise for her performance, including her ability to play a man convincingly-not just be a woman being a man.
