What was the guy's purpose for being there....

He did not take the money and watch so what the heck was he doing and why.

i think he was simply a serial killer...there was no twist

Possibly, but there were a bunch of photos about him with plans for other atms that were shown during the credits while they were rolling. he had info about quite a few others. Did you see this...Thanks for your input!

Yeah because HE'S A SERIAL KILLER like the other poster mentioned. You don't get the 'serial' title added to your status for a single outing, he clearly does this frequently.

Exactly--it couldn't have been made any clearer that he's simply a serial killer planning a series of "perfect crimes", where there's not the slightest indication that anyone else was involved.

But what was he doing permanently at the back of the ATM? I understand that he disabled the heater but he went behind the building after that again. What was he doing there? I was under the impression that he was after something (not the people inside) but have no clue what... 

Serial killer or he did have issue with all of the people in that ATM building. They all currently worked for the same company. Maybe he followed them after the party and they were clueless to it.

I think he was breaking into ATM machines. So it's possible that he was planning on knocking off ATM Machines , and he wasn't expecting people to be around the ATM at that time of night. His map had mini mart on it , so planning on hitting them next.

I just find it dumb that the frame job worked. There's plenty of evidence he didn't do it....outside of the ATM! Ok there was a video inside but something clearly outside with a 4th party involved.

He was waiting to use the ATM but the three guys inside wouldn't leave and in the end he got inpatient.
