Woody's best in 25 yrs, maybe 30

Though I have to admit I gave up on him and have not seen many of his in that time.

I've seen most of his recent movies, though I somehow avoided this one until just yesterday. And I have to say that to me, this is now one of his classics. When a movie starts with a great idea, then actually follows through in a satisfying way, that's a rare and amazing thing. The cast was entirely perfect top to bottom, and the direction was Allen at his subtle, humorous, romantic best.

I have seldom found woody to be subtle, but maybe that is because I "get him" so well. What he is doing seems obvious to me. I think that is why he is so polarizing. People who don't get him just find nothing to like.

what did you find subtle in this?

reply

Well, at least in this film he did not cast himself as mentor or even love-interest to a hot twenty-something.

I have yet to see a Woody film I don't like. I don't gush over all of them, but I like them all.

If I'm tracking correctly, you're giving up around Broadway Danny Rose or Hannah and Her Sisters? There's loads of good stuff between then and now.

Mighty Aphrodite is wonderful. So is Manhattan Murder Mystery (brilliant). Hollywood Ending isn't his best work, but it's charming and nice.

Match Point, I think, is a beautiful, shining film and one of his all-time greats. Whatever Works is also fantastic.

I like his new stuff and his early stuff and his famous stuff and his unknown contributions. I just like them all for different reasons. Contrary to popular opinion, I don't think he's making the same movie over and over again. Watching Bananas, Manhattan, Match Point, and Midnight in Paris in a row will convince anybody of that.

Loved BDR, H&HS, and MMM. Now add midnight in Paris. Truly funny and lovely movie. Hemingway CRACKED me up! As did DalEEEEE

You might want to watch Match Point, which is fantastic, complex, and another film not-so-similar to Allen's others.

I love his movies, though - a lot - and I'd encourage you to maybe check out The Purple Rose of Cairo. It's hilarious and shares some themes with Midnight in Paris.

I really liked Vicky Christina Barcelona (9/10), Scoop (8/10), and Match Point (7/10).

With a 5/10 this one falls between A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy (6/10) and Curse of the Jade Scorpion (4/10) for me.

Not me, but check it out: http://www.redbubble.com/people/nesling/

it's good, but i don't like it as much as Scoop or Small time crooks,, or manhattan Murder Mystery, all of which are hilarious
