I adore Everyone says I love you, I love Hannah and her sisters, Mighty Aphrodite and Vicky, Christina, Barcelona, and really like most of other Woody's films, but this is totally sub par. Just endless name dropping.
All the love for it was just Americans making up for 10 years of hating on the French.
I don't think Woody Allen has ever hated the French. I like some of his films better than others, and some not at all, but I think this is the best of his recent films.

I heard lots of people praising this movie to the skies. When I watched it, the movie was disappointing. The concept is a good one, the visits back to old-time Paris were enjoyable. I like the actors in other movies and went into it hoping for a charming, clever movie set in romantic Paris. But this was not what I found.
Mostly the problem was with Owen Wilson and his in-laws. The in-laws and fiancée were so stereotypically right-wingnut rich americans and we were obviously supposed to hate them. But where is the subtlety? And why did Owen Wilson get so involved with them in the first place then if he doesn't like them or agree with their morals? Because the girl was pretty? Because they were rich? Then he goes and steals his fiancée's earrings to give to another girl? I guess it is ok because the fiancee is obnoxious, and obnoxious people don't deserve not to have their earrings stolen? But then the maid gets blamed. And he is the person we are rooting for in all of this?
The movie seems very simplistic overall and not a great masterpiece to me so I find it to be overrated and agree with the OP.
I am not a big Woody Allen fan admittedly and have some trouble separating the politics surrounding his life from his art. The only other Allen film I have seen was Match Point (which I also heard a lot of praise about prior to watching) and I liked that one.
