Buddy was a Complete JERK!!!

Shocked no one has mentioned this.

What a self-absorbed, prudish, cowardly punk Buddy was. I understand Mavis was full of herself, but it was clear she was suffering mild mental illness, and the way he treated her was disgusting. Telling her to leave his house, saying everyone felt "sorry for her", acting indifferent when she tries to just catch up at the bar, being passive-aggressive about his new life, and totally dumping her apparently because she had a miscarriage.

He seems like one of those Square-A types that only marries a woman who can bare a child and make him look and feel worthy as a man. Did anyone else think he could have been a little gentler with Mavis, instead of completely dissing her like that?

Nobody mentioned it, because nobody was thinking it. He treated her VERY fairly in my opinion. If I had just had a kid with my wife and my high school ex girlfriend all of a sudden called out of the blue I wouldn't even have met up with her out of respect for my wife.

If I did go meet up with her, and she was dressed like Mavis was I would have had one beer and been out of there as it was then 100% obvious what her intentions were.

Call it what it was, Buddy was too nice and Mavis was going through a midlife crisis brought on by her divorce and the baby picture she saw online (they should have made it a liked post she saw on facebook, not an e-mail - more believable that way as she would never be included in e-mails from his wife 20 years after high school)

I totally get where you're coming from, but I still was puzzled by why they broke up in the first place...until it's revealed that he dumped her because she couldn't have children? Or maybe I misinterpreted that. But it seems if Mavis was able to have a child, he would have stayed with her. Then again, perhaps it was her selfish attitude that made him leave. He never is quite clear, and of course Mavis is so self-absorbed she would refuse to think it had anything to do with her personality.

Fascinating character- I think Theron should have been nominated. Thanks for your input.

Not sure why they broke up, but way back when I was heartbroken due to my high school sweet heart break-up. An older guy I worked with at the time told me to not take it so hard, as there was realistically only a 1% chance of any high school relationship lasting until marriage - or the test of time.

So I figure they broke up due to simply growing apart - he works in a factory, she is a writer in the city - that's 2 non-compatible people in my opinion.

Totally agree. Here is a copy and paste of what I just responded with to the thread about BETH being a jerk (??)

"Lgirl is right on the money with that post. All of it. Mavis mentions she got the email "like the rest of the gang" so the group email obviously went out to the old High school gang which she was obviously apart of and probably ran it being the Prom queen kind of thing. So I am sure whoever sent it, Beth, or Buddy using Beths email (they seemed like a trusting couple who might use each other's accounts and know one another's passwords) either way it wasn't a vindictive thing in my eyes. She was probably attatched to the group email to hear news about all her old high school friends. It would have been more realistic for them to post it on Facebook. But I think they did the email thing to cause drama to make Mavis narcissistically think it was personal for whatever reasons. And yeah they probably heard she got married and figured she still was. And also figured she was happy, doing her thing writing in the city. It had been 15 years! They prob thought she was happy and moved on. They didn't know she was suffering from depression and other things. Ruminating on the past as much as she was. They were all well adjusted people. So they just naturally assumed this about Mavis. Beth's friends did make nasty comments, but I think that was them being protective of Beth. It was obvious Mavis was being flirtatious and a bit to close for comfort and her hanging with Buddy and Beth seemed so random...... and sure, they probably had jealousy towards her in High School. But they were still happy people. You could tell. They were pissed the old Prom Queen randomly was in town spending her time with their best friends husband. I didn't think Beth was a jerk at all. I did however think it was strange that Buddy kissed Mavis. I watched it like 4 times and they both go in at the same time. He even holds her a little. It wasnt a total one sided kiss. And the babysitter interrupted it. I do think he was just trashed, and she was totally manipulating him in that moment. And I do wonder if he told Beth about it, or just forgot it even happened, or wanted to forget that it happened because he clearly was in a healthy happy marriage with a child. The last thing I would ever think after watching this was that Beth was a jerk. If anything Buddy was kind of a jerk for allowing Mavis to continue making a fool of herself. For not being more up front. For allowing Beth to invite her to the baby naming ceremony. And then in front of everyone calling her sick and stuff--- even if she was acting like a horrible person and making a scene. He didnt have to say that. He allowed her to be there. He even kissed her. He didn't really "lead her on" but he didn't fully stop anything in time when it was clear what her intentions were."

She never "tries to just catch up at the bar". She set out on her trip with the sole objective of stealing him from his wife. She is completely nuts, and everything she does is an attempt to disrupt his life and his relationship with his wife. If anything, he should have been more forceful in telling her to leave, but he was trying to be kind and considerate.

YES...YES HE WAS
