How do you nominate The Boxtrolls and Big Hero 6 over this? Not hating on either but Big Hero 6 hasn't even got a full release in the UK (hence why Wreck-It-Ralph wasn't dominated two years ago) so it shouldn't technically be eligible and The Boxtrolls was alright but nowhere near award worthy. This feels like another case of the voters just looking at the studio name and casting their votes. The Lego Movie better win now, that also deserves it.

Really? Wreck-it-Ralph didn't get nominated? Huh. Still, despite that Disney film getting overlooked, I agree that the general attitude towards Disney has shifted over the past few years. It's become the new Pixar in the eyes of the Awards people. Laika has a strong core of supporters in the industry it seems, so regardless of how well it was received it was gonna be nominated.

At this point I'm finished following award season to the extent that I have been. It's clear Dragons 2 is going to get overlooked by the Oscars. Guess it being the highest-grossing animated film worldwide didn't help it, but I can guarantee you that had HTTYD2 been a Pixar or a Disney film not only would it be getting nominated, it would be winning awards left and right.

Absolutely ridiculous.

Yet at the end of the day, remember: awards don't technically matter. Your own opinion of the film is what actually matters. I think HTTYD2 was not only the best animated film of the year, but one of the best of the year period. It's a shame that box office numbers make people believe the opposite.

reply

Well the BAFTA only allows three films to be nominated in this category. So maybe it was just the case of the movie losing by just a few votes. And personally speaking, I liked The Lego Movie and Big Hero 6 more than HTTYD2. But Boxtrolls didn't deserve the nomination, IMO.

And I don't think that its a studio name thing. I mean, Dreamworks is a bigger studio name than Laika anyway. And Dragons 2 is very much a big studio animated film. If that was the case, then it would've been nominated.

Dreamworks doesn't have a strong history in terms of quality though, they can swing in either direction. There used to be a time where dreamworks were mocked and called a second rate pixar. Laika is a stop motion powerhouse with a pretty consistent backlog, stop motion is considered more of art (which is logical) and probably a strong reason why it got nominated. The Book Of Life or Mr Peabody and Sherman were both more deserving too.

That's true. You have a point. And I do agree with you. When the Oscar nominations are announced, I hope the animated feature nominees come out like this:

-Big Hero 6
-The Book of Life
-How to Train Your Dragon 2
-The Lego Movie
-Mr. Peabody & Sherman

reply

I agree with that list completely, very unlikely that will be the outcome though but you can't win them all. As long as Dragons, Lego and Big Hero 6 are nominated then I think I will be happy but some love for the other two would be nice.

reply

I hope Big Hero 6 wins. It was much more emotionally moving to me then HTTYD2 and Lego.

The eligibility period for the BAFTAs runs into the spring of a New Year, so that the nominations can include films released in the US at the end of the previous year but held over until the early months for UK distribution. That's how Big Hero 6 gets in, along with a number of other prominent films, e.g. Birdman, that wouldn't otherwise qualify.
