Is this Spielberg's masterpiece?

I think Raiders is the greatest action adventure ever.
I rate this heartless piece of exploitation as utter crap.

Yet, this movie represents and showcases his MO and art like no other:
take from the past somebody else's idea, possibly loaded with nostalgia from childhood or teenage years, and put it on the screen.

So, is RPO his true masterpiece?

reply

I think that "Raiders" was Spielberg's final classic film. He made some admirable and very good films after that. But, "Raiders," I believe, was the last film that will always be thought of as a timeless classic.

reply

No way, Jurassic Park, Schindler’s List, Private Ryan - all forever classics.

reply

Not for me.

reply

That’s fine, we’re talking about films the world will deem timeless classics. I’ll add E.T. to the list.

reply

Nope. It only works if you're into nostalgia.
I'm cool with nostalgia, but I was really annoyed by the time the final battle began.

reply

I alredy stated this is utter crap.
That is not the point.

reply

And I answered you question.

"So, is RPO his true masterpiece?"

Answer is "no." The rest is why

reply

Well, I am fine with nostalgia, and this shitfest annoyed me for its exploitation and dishonesty, and aside of nostalgia the rest of the movie is insultingly bad.

Still, the way it is engineered and assembled, this is pure concentrated Spielberg. No other movie embodies his style and essence and value$ like this.

reply

I must agree. This was the equivalent of going to get a fountain soda but only getting syrup. Sure, it may be sweet and nice at the first sip, but after that it's diabetes.

reply

Definitely not. This is pretty low end of his career. This movie is a 'memberberries film aimed at a very specific generation and will age VERY poorly, if I were to guess. Juraasic park still holds up, and continues to spawn sequels. Saving Private Ryan is probably the best movie he's ever done from a technical standpoint, but it didn't quite have the impact on culture that Jurassic Park did.

This is the worst Spielberg movie for me, and it's a high bar (or low bar). He make a lot of bad movies, but this is the worst I've ever seen.

This turd is even worse than Minority Report.
