Definitely tongue-in-cheek!

It seemed definitely tongue-in-cheek to me! I don't think it was making fun of this genre as such, but playing with Norse mythology using it.
I thought it was really good (I had read it had 'very mild scares' prior to watching so I wasn't expecting a horror), & even though I'm British & don't know all of the fairy tales & fables referred to in it, I really liked the sense of humour & found it very similar to my own. It felt a little offbeat & when I read that 3 or 4 or the actors are comedians in Norway it made sense as they dead-panned so well!
I was impressed with the effects actually (I think I had expected it to be more like the recent US 'creature-features' like Sharknado etc.), & I also really fell in love with the stunning scenery - I can see how the myths must have been born there.

Yes, this movie was a comedy, with a very Norwegian sense of humor.

Here are the funny things I noticed -
The whole bit about trolls smelling the blood of Christians,
The Troll Security Society (or whatever it was - TSS, bureaucracy),
The form for filling out the death of a troll (another poke at bureaucracy),
The Polish bear smugglers (worse Polish accent, btw, a Norwegian guy played the Pole),
The bureaucrat who came out and made the bear footprints (backwards in one case),
The vet explaining exactly how sunlight kills them,
All the weird troll bits in that guy's trailer, hanging the tails on the ceiling/walls,
The satellite images to show the farmer where the "tornado" had been,
The guy bitten by a rabid troll.....

And on and on and on. I think it was all supposed to be funny, just very very absurd and dry humor. I'm sure Norwegian people laughed their assess off at it all.

I'm scared to think about an American remake.
