Why was this film received as average?

I can understand that everyone has their own opinion but I feel that this film was underrated. Sure it wasn't a masterpiece but deserve to be around a 7.5-7.8 on IMDB. The acting was great and the musical score and cinematography were fantastic. The film paced well, the film was well told, I really enjoyed the two stories that was good. Although I believe Gosling got a shorter role, but he was good. So was cooper.

I found it to be quite moving and emotionally hard-hitting at times, and the acting was wonderful (and as you said, cinematography and music). But I think for overall "flow" it wasn't great. When it was good, it was great, but I felt like it had a lot of peaks and lows with how the story moved. The 3 act thing can be hard to pull off because we get finally get invested in a character, and then it moves on to the next one. I just found it a bit choppy and uneven. But it is certainly worthy of recognition for all the things it got right.
