Katharine's new show looks amazing!

Can't wait! Here's a trailer for Debra's new show too. I'm not big on detective shows but anything with Debra in it is worth watching. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MkN7P08_oYM

Here's an idea: next time, instead of being late, just *beep* on my face-Emma Stone

It does look promising, or rather, it would, if McPhee weren't there. Her acting does not appear to have improved, and her character looks as if she were stuck in like a piece from the wrong puzzle. She sticks out like a sore thumb. Too bad for the series.

Wonder who she had to bang to get this. At least, I hope he was, or they were, unmarried.

Oh, right. So, she secretly trained a flock of sandflies.

It's deja vu all over again!

The dead eyes. The flat voice. The blank face. At least she'll never get wrinkles if she never makes an expression.

Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme nothing there.

Oh, right. So, she secretly trained a flock of sandflies.

Kind of O/T but have you noticed if you look up McPhee on IMDB, it says "Actress, The House Bunny (2008)" ? And her "Trademark" is her "curly hair." LOL. Okay.

reply

Yes, I did notice it, back in 2012 when I was newly discussing "Smas' here with y'all. Indeed - OK, whatever . . .

Oh, right. So, she secretly trained a flock of sandflies.

"Known For" is always gubbed on IMDB. Lisa Kudrow is not "known" for Friends, The Comeback or Web Therapy. Debra Messing is not known for Smash. Julia Louis Dreyfus is not known for Veep.

reply

Actually, I have heard very good things about "Veep;" it is apparently quite a showcase for Ms. Dreyfus, and has enhanced her credit, so that is not entirely inaccurate, and Lisa Kudrow is indeed "known for" "Friends," in the same way Debra Messing might be said to be "known for" "Will & Grace" - "Friends" launched Kudrow's career.

Oh, right. So, she secretly trained a flock of sandflies.

reply

Yeah, I know. "Gubbed" means incorrect, broken, malfunctioned (Scottish slang) . Messing, Kudrow and Dreyfus are all very much known for the projects I listed and are brilliant in them.

in the same way Debra Messing might be said to be "known for" "Will & Grace"

Messing's IMDB says she is known for W&G.

She's absolutely hysterical in it! I suggest you watch it.

She looks very good in it to me- but then again, I loved her on Smash. She looks convincing at fighting back the tears when she's told her son is a genius and at what point is her voice flat? I really want to know how to identify that cause it's probably something I would do. She never sounds "mumbled" or "scuffled" in her pronunciation. Is that what you've mentioned before about cadence?

reply

McPhee's speaking voice is not well produced, her tone is weak and inexpressive. Cadence would refer to the "melody" as it were, of her lines - the up-and-down of the notes. She is weak here too.

McPhee simply is not an actress worth the name.

Oh, right. So, she secretly trained a flock of sandflies.

reply

Honestly, I think she looks a lot better (as an actress) in that trailer than she did throughout Smash.

Indeed, the character makes about as much sense in 3D as it did on paper, and I don't see how she's any more of a "lead" than Jadyn Wong. Except the male lead is clearly meant to identify with her son and voila... instant love interest. Maybe CBS has some wisdom and has downplayed McPhee's role in the series for the commercial... which could be a double edged sword. Protect-the-genius-kid hasn't done well on TV though ("Touch"; "Believe"). And Messing's show sounds rotten on paper, frankly, a misbegotten hybrid (haven't watched the trailer yet precisely because the description sounded so kludgy). To quote DHD:

The Mysteries Of Laura follows the life and relationships of Laura Diamond (Messing), a female homicide detective who can handle murderous criminals — but not her hell-raising twin children.

Oh, my goodness. Kludgy is a good word. I do like Messing, but - yech. Sounds truly vomitous.

Oh, right. So, she secretly trained a flock of sandflies.

Oh, I may have to take it back if Greg Berlanti is the showrunner, though - he's about the only person I would think of who could meld those genres and make it palatable. In fact, I WAS thinking of him, lol.

reply

I have watched the trailer - Messing looks good in it (I mean her acting, although she looks very good in a swimsuit) - no surprise there. It might be worth a view. I will say the children's - and Messing's character's husband's - part in the trailer does NOT look promising, but the cop stuff isn't bad.

Oh, right. So, she secretly trained a flock of sandflies.

So, kind of like Smash then? She should be used to that!!

reply

Good catch - yes, of course, you are right. Although the children don't look like Leo (much smaller).

One hopes they don't legitimise the comparison by drowning the show in sludge.

Oh, right. So, she secretly trained a flock of sandflies.

If Debra wasn't associated with The Mysteries of Laura, I probably wouldn't consider giving it a shot, but she's amazing and will most definitely elevate it if it's not that interesting. But it does look better than it sounds. Same with Scorpion. I thought it sounded really boring and uninteresting but the trailer makes it look like a big action movie. I was going to watch it anyway since Katharine's a part of it, but now I'm really looking forward to seeing it.

Yay for Kat McPhee and Debra Messing getting new shows!! I've read the #Scorpion script and it's a lot of fun and Kat's character Paige is great. So much more interesting than Karen so it'll be a good role for her, and I loved the trailer lol. I mean, no idea how they can sustain the action week on week, cos the pilot looks like a movie, but it's also a CBS procedural at the end of the day, so they're not breaking any new ground.

I'm not sure what to think of Debra's new show from the trailer, lol. I mean, I love Debra but the show looks like a potential hot mess. But Debra doing comedy is <3 and there's also Josh Lucas eye candy so ......

Scorpion reminds me of scandal to some degree. Maybe its the Genius and the team thing but it gives me Scandal tease.
