Mathias (spoilers)

I really liked how he was an adversary in the beginning but by the end of S4 he was an ally of Walt's.

But was there anything that caused him to change his attitude about Walt? I know that he disliked Walt because of Walt arresting his former boss. The only thing I can think of is that he slowly saw Walt and his attitude and realized that Malachi was wrong and that he (Malachi) was in fact using his position as tribal chief to run an extortion ring.

But still, was there any one specific event that caused Mathias to trust and basically work with Walt?

reply

Not that I recall. I thought they did a fairly good job of showing a transition as he saw Walt was just and reliable, with no agenda other than to help and to find the truth.

My thought is that Walt wanted to bring Gab's rapists to justice, even though they were 1) white; 2) worked for a company that brought a lot of jobs and revenue; 3) were being protected by powerful interests.

Matthias had a predisposition to seeing 'white man's justice' and 'white men' as being very tribal. So, irony. Yeah. Anyway, I also thought Matthias was a d*ck at first, especially when he punched Walt. Walt let him have that one, and we know he could have whooped on Matthias, based on Walt's ability to arrest Hector and the black eye he gave Hector which Hec was sporting when he came to in the jail cell.

Have to admit I started off disliking Mathias but ended up liking him a lot as a character. The writers came around and developed his character well as both he and Walt came to trust one another. And Mathias truly cares about justice for his people. He's a welcome Native American character in popular culture.

I liked Mathias from the first time I saw him. I thought too he needed a bigger role and glad they have given him more time.
