Chance Gilbert

Just watched Population 25. Does anybody know what country Chance is supposed to be from? Towards the end of the episode he sounds a little Irish, but the actor is Swedish.

reply

I think he is supposed to be Irish. I can't remember what it was that suggested that but I remember some mention of it.

reply

Didn't he say he fled a fascist country... he cannot be Irish... the UK may be many things, but a fascist country it has never been.
Eastern European countries would be more regarded as fascist.....

reply

Republicans in Northern Ireland might characterise the British government that way after "800 years of English oppression."

Just a suggestion.

reply

Didn't the Irish kidnap a welsh boy? who went on to become a patron saint...

the British Isles have been invaded countless times over the millennia - romans, Vikings [Scandinavia] , Normans, Dutch, French, etc - Even the Spanish tried.

Depends upon what some derive as 'fascism' - the true meaning of it, has never been used to describe the UK... Italy - yes, Eastern European Countries - yes.... Nazi Germany - definitely Yes...

Going back to the topic in hand -

I'd say the Chance Gilbert isn't his original name...... more like a name he gave himself to start a new life when he arrived in the US...
I guess it would have been the easiest way to integrate - have an Americanised name if you were originally from Eastern Europe...

Gilbert (as a surname) isn't Irish..... more Germanic in origin...
Longmire is (more Northern) old English.
