When does it become Serialized

I've been thinking about watching Longmire but am generally not a fan of procedural dramas. When does it become more serialized? Is it right after Netflix picked it up or does it happen a bit earlier? To enjoy the later serialized seasons do I need to watch the earlier ones?

It happens before Netflix picked it up. I can't remember exactly, but I think season 2 (maybe season 3).
