Why did *name redacted* hate Walt so much? (Spoilers)

Major spoilers. Read if you don't care.

So Barlow Connally killed his own son after Branch confronted him about paying Jacob Nighthorse to send David Bridges to have Martha Longmire murdered and then do away with the methhead who shot her. Was this just a very long sociopathic game, to ensure his son would be sheriff and therefore in a powerful position? Or was there another reason--which I must have missed--why Barlow had so much personal venom towards Walt?

The Hubs and I both are wondering and pondering.

Martha Longmire was the biggest opposition to the casino being built, so her murder started out as getting rid of opposition. She had terminal cancer, so the hope for Barlow was that no one would notice she was murdered, instead thinking she would be thought of dying of cancer.

Barlow did eventually want his son to be sheriff, if not for any other reason other than to have someone in your pocket, because Walt Longmire can't be bought.

At least that's how I see it.

In other words: money. Both Barlow and Nighthorse stood to make a LOT of money, thereby also gaining a LOT of power.

After I learned why Walt was being sued, (land), I was irritated. Especially because if a lawyer stood to gain from a lawsuit, he would have been thrown off the case in a heartbeat. Major conflict of interest.
