Well, I guess they have to do something to keep Scandal from being banished to the Land of Forgotten Shows.

reply

Goodness, that looks like a project at an elementary school. Grown people with cut outs? Maybe I'm just not any fun but that looks silly.

I bet some of the people will do it, there are always the fans who submit posters to Kerry but....

I guess any chatter is better than none at all.

reply

I almost rather hear nothing until it's time rather than cheesy stunts like this. I didn't even like her Twitter stuff during the season because I just don't get it. Never have and never will. I hope she doesn't do a repeat of those cartoon faces next year. I never got what they were suppose to be.

reply

Precisely. Make a good show and you wouldn't have to resort to things like this. Thankfully I missed the cartoon faces.

reply

What I don't get is why even bother doing stunts like this when you do everything you can to push your loudest fans away?

Same thing with them hyping up the show. Like yesterday Kerry tweeted out the wait will be worth it. I would love for them to surprise us and season 6 truly kicks major ass, but does anyone not expect for Olivia to still just be a prop for Mellie/Jake and Rowan? Why not be like shows like Power and let the show stand on it's own without overhyping it to the fans?

I just see this sort of fan interaction stuff with other shows and unlike with the Scandal, they usually deliver. And you see the deep appreciation these shows have for their fans. While with Scandal it now just feels fake and it just feels like they're just playing with the fans. Like how sad does #OlitzS6 look in Kerry's timeline?

She's known for making last minute changes pretty often and I just really hope she uses this extra time wisely. She has several months to really perfect season 6 while Kerry has her baby. I would hope she'd want to make it her best yet considering how we don't get to watch while all the other shows premiered this month. I kind of feel like if season 6 sux, there is absolutely no excuse. She has more than enough time to do as many re-writes as she wants so we should get the best this time around.

If she would just stop using her lead as a prop for her pets and truly be all about her, not seeing how that wouldn't help in getting this show back on track. After 4 seasons of seeing how it hasn't at all benefited the show to undermine the Olivia character, you don't get why Shonda would even consider continuing to waste this character the way she has. And why would a show that loves to pat itself on the back when it comes to how they interact with their fans, keep giving their loyal fans such bullsh!t storylines?

BTW, not sure if some of you are aware, but both Kerry & Shonda have said recently the reason they're coming back in January is because Shonda only needed 16 episdoes to tell this arc of the story. So according to them the break isn't because of Kerry's pregnancy.

reply

No I wasn't aware. That's an even stranger reason. Is that something shows do??? Have a short season with not that many episodes on purpose??? It seems like they'd want as many eps as possible. I also would assume people would like as many episodes as possible for a show they like. I end up never wanting my fave shows to end by the end of the season.

reply

That's called PR 101- trying to take the heat off Kerry being the "reason for delay". Shonda is just lying and sent that lie out to all the sites a while back. I still can't believe people actually BELIEVE what Shonda says in regard to this show lol. ( She's a PROVEN liar)

Kerry pregnancy IS the reason for Scandal coming back in Jan. You can bet your life that if she wasn't pregnant, Scandal would be going on its third week. Season 3 has 18 episodes, so Shonda wanted a short season then too? Season 4 & 5 had 22/20 episodes. Oh look- what do you know... Kerry is pregnant AGAIN so we'll have to trim it to 16 because that's pretty much the max you can have because the TV season ends in May. Shonda needs to cut her crap- It's getting old!

reply

Hi Lori,

Eh, many of the posters here also blamed the shows decline in live ratings, tweets, and overall fan enthusiasm as a reason for the delay. You recall the live ratings were sinking every week, all of the spin that it was due to Groundhog's Day, Daylight Savings, people were attacked by bears and couldn't get to their TV sets... It gives them a chance to reboot, so its a win-win. And Shonda often cited 20-22 episodes was the reason her writing vs Cable shows with 10-13 eps was so much more challenging.

However, since she's been given a shorter season, one would hope that the writing has improved since they aren't rushing... The magic question is will they use the time wisely or is S6 just the same as seasons 3-5 with plot holes, character assassination and fluff?

Technically, they have enough in the can they could air some episodes now for a mini fall season so they don't have to wait until January. Kerry was able to do ~ 6 episodes?? Bat probably knows which one they stopped at, so they don't have to be gone for her pregnancy, they've chosen not to air them or to write her out of a few episodes.

I think it was at 6 x 05 they stopped.

I also wondered why didn't they just air what they filmed and as laughable as it sounds, why not try to do at least 3 - 4 episodes without Olivia? As much as some of the side characters have been showcased over Olivia, them not even trying to film without Kerry seems odd. Especially when you think back to some of the acclaim Mellie has received (ex. Mellie should be the lead)

We clown on the ratings, but even no Olivia episodes would be doing better than what Notorious is currently doing.

Oh I know. They could have had Liv off in treatment somewhere for a little while then returning in January with a new and improved Liv that has come to her senses. Why can't we see her healthy for once??? She's been effed up the whole series. That's cool and all but she's just going to keep going in circles until she gets help. Would have been a perfect time.

WHAT!? So they've been torturing people for no reason? Why couldn't they start those 16 episodes in September with the other shows? A lot of people didn't know it was delayed and were ready for Scandal two weeks ago. By January they may be over it. I'm sorry but that's stupid.

Hillary Clinton visited the set during season 5B. A short time later it was announced that season 6 would be cut short on top of the news of baby #2 for Kerry. I understand they cut the season so that nothing airs in the run up to the November election. Can't have a show about a presidential affair muddy the election waters for Hillary, who Shonda supports. Can't take that chance. So....no buzz...no show...nothing until the election is over. If Hillary wins, it won't even be 12 hours before the press for the show heats up in full swing.

I don't get this either. But the popular theory is, it's because if Olivia is fixed then her interactions with Mellie/Jake & Rowan wouldn't work. She needs to be broken for them to shine and for us to get these gross/weird Olake scenes which IMO, is just stupid. Everything's down, ratings, buzz, tweets, etc. but let's continue to keep Olivia weak around these 3?

Dumb...

It would be like Empire doing everything in their power to keep Cookie weak around Empire's supporting characters, who are obviously less popular than her.

It boggles my mind. I would love to know what's going through their heads when they write this stuff knowing it's not what most viewers want to see. "Let's take this show that used to be a hit and see how hard we can sabotage it?"

I didnt even think about her waiting until after the real election. It honestly slipped my mind.

ABC is having a rough Fall. Seeing alot of talk that it was a mistake to get rid of Paul Lee because the new President sucks ass at picking pilots. Even with Scandal's fallen ratings they could have used the ratings Scandal would have brought in.

reply

That's a shame. I was hoping she would improve things.

Do you mean they're blaming Channing Dungey? She just took over about 6 months ago, they can't run a bus over her yet. Well, its corporate America + Hollywood, of course they could.🚌 However, most of those shows must have already been under development.

Hopefully they give her time for a real turn around, even in sports they give a new coach a "rebuilding year" before saying he sucks. Designated Survivor is doing extremely well, so one big hit is at least something to brag about.

From Variety today:

OCTOBER 4, 2016 | 03:18PM PT
The premiere of ABC’s “Designated Survivor” doubled its ratings over seven days, giving it the most growth in Nielsen live-plus-seven numbers of any new-series debut from the first week of the 2016-17 season. But NBC’s “This Is Us” remained premiere week’s highest rated new show, showing strong growth after an impressive start.

In live-plus-seven, the Sept. 21 “Designated Survivor” drew a 4.4 rating among viewers 18-49, a 100% increase from the 2.2 that it drew in live-plus same day numbers. That was the largest percentage gain and largest actual gain of any new-series premiere that week. But it was not enough to lift “Designated Survivor” past “This Is Us.” The NBC drama drew a 2.8 for its Sept. 20 premiere, then saw it grow 64% to a 4.6.

And total viewers of 10M live, ~18M via DVR, not too shabby.
1 DESIGNATED SURVIVOR – P ABC 10042 17712 7670 76%

I haven't watched "This is Us" yet, but it sounds like the hit of the season besides Survivor.

Yeah, they're blaming Channing Dungey. Like you, i'm thinking it was Paul Lee that put those *beep* pilots into development and she didn't have much to choose from, but then I see some some arguing that she went for *beep* Scandal clones instead of going for the few shows that would have been different like The Jury or The Death of Eva Sofia Valdez which would have starred Gina Torres. Also in these ratings discussions it's being pointed out that Scandal isn't what it once was anymore or it was never that good to begin with, so why would ABC choose to come out with these copy cats? Also seeing alot of criticism about ABC's promotion.

Hopefully they give her time for a real turn around, even in sports they give a new coach a "rebuilding year" before saying he sucks. Designated Survivor is doing extremely well, so one big hit is at least something to brag about.

But ABC's had 2 of the biggest flops of the new season, Notorious and Conviction that premiered Monday to 0.9. And both shows followed hit shows. And what's looking even worst for ABC is the fact none of the midseason shows look good, including Shonda's new show. So it's looks like it's going to be a long season over at ABC.

reply

Fair point about the choices, we know Scandal sat around the low 1s, even with Kerry working her assets off so its definitely not the overall premise of the show that made it rise, it was the chemistry of the leads, who shot JR type promo, etc... The good old days when this board was filled. I am not watching either Notorious or Conviction but they'll need their own version of Olitz or something totally new but equally compelling.

reply

Hey Mommy, the problem is, if you don't have a compelling plot and there aren't any relationships that you're interested in, plus no chemistry between the main characters, your show is doomed to failure. Notorious was snoozeworthy, and I am not interested in Conviction.

And if I only could,
make a deal with god,
And get him to swap our places

reply

Maybe I'm just not any fun but that looks silly.

Yes, it's silly yet sad at the same time. I could see a Disney channel show doing something like this. Scandal isn't even the type of show that fits this type of nonsense.
